"Across the Universe" by the Beatles is either the most upbeat song ever or the most pesimsitic, depending on how you read it.

One Drop by Bob Marley & the Wailers, Survival Album. I dunno, pretty serious subject matter but the tune makes my "heart soar".

"Its the End of the World as We Know It" by REM. It is the best song- an upbeat message about the end of the world. If the world ended, and I was listening to that song, I would feel fine.

"Rockin' in the Free World" by Neil Young, my second vote. Although, the new video is edited and contains a little more Michael Moore than I care to see.

SS

On its face, yes. But of course you know that McFerrin meant that ironically.

The Fab Four seems to be all over this list and I'll add a personal favorite (especially now that I have kids): All Together Now

Oh, did you say upbeat?

Marty

Yup. The couple of times I tried it I rode the rails. Once the drip hit I thought I was going to gag from a numb throat. Always figured that base or rock would be the same but worse.

Thing is... Xtal is too nice, gotta stay away from it.

These Are the Days -- 10,000 Maniacs. Cheesy feel good early 90's alterna-rock song.

Since they broke up, Natalie Merchant has become a raving loon, their guitarist passed away, and the other guys are living back in Jamestown NY.

Yes, she has become a raving loon. "In My Tribe" is one of the greatest albums of the eighties.

Yeah, 10,000 Maniacs is my favorite band (from my childhood). I was a fan of Natalie Merchant until she became all militant and started singing striclty folk music. What's up with her now?

Ok, I know I'm digging a little here, but, I've been sort of embarassed to admit my 10,000 maniacs feelings. I've found others!!! Ultra-g, I wouldn't have suspected you. (we can't let them find out over in SS/Fixed Gear!)

A raving loon? Didn't like Tigerlily? Ophelia was sooo dramatic, however, there are a few songs I like-Thick as Thieves and Break your Heart...

So the Maniacs aren't up to much lately? How d'you guys feel about them after Natalie?

I honestly think she has gone crazy. I have a photo I took with her outside one of her concerts in 1999, but after that tour she went off her rocker.

Her website is full of dark militant rantings about politics.

Anyway, she was great up until she broke up with her drummer boyfriend, I think she started hating men after that.
