It's nice to see the Daily News doing the right thing. First, I read the story about the bike messenger we discussed yesterday. It was on page 50 (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/local/story/254193p-217674c.html) and basically put the blame on the messenger, never once mentioning that the New York Vehicle Code says that if you're doored, it's the doorer's fault. Didn't expect much, so no disappointment, although someone should let the Daily News know (which I gracefully will, of course being the loudmouth that I am).
Then I got to the op-ed section, expecting to find more ass kissing of Madeline Provenzano, and didn't get that at all. In fact, what I got was the exact opposite. The Daily News awarded Councilmember Provenzano the "New York Knucklehead Award" for this week. Here's the accompanying op-ed:

Comes now a City Council proposal to regulate New Yorkers by requiring them to get licenses for a legal activity, and, of course, pay a nice fee for the privilege, and, of course, build a bureaucracy to keep track of the paperwork. The activity is riding a bicycle, and the fee would be $25. As for the bureaucracy, who knows how bloated it would grow?
The idea springs from the knucklehead of Bronx Councilwoman Madeline Provenzano, who explains that her constituents are fed up with dangerous bicyclists. The city has more than a few of same, but requiring every rider older than 16 to register his or her wheels surely won't cut down on the scourge of speeding bike messengers.
Provenzano's thinking seems to be that if every bike had a license plate, you might get the tag number after you were run down. Well, good luck. The more efficient way to crack down on wild cyclists is to have cops blitz them with tickets. We'd go for that, as well as for having Provenzano affix this award to her bicycle seat so it is plainly readable to voters.
Apparently nobody is buying the BS coming out of Provenzano's office, including the Daily News which is hardly a bastion of conservative thought in this fair city. When the people who would most likely be on your side don't agree with you, you're in trouble.
