I had a slow start this year commuting to work and was delayed by surgery last month. This week I rode Monday and Tuesday, drove Wednesday. Tomorrow I hope to ride a Schwinn that I'm building tonight.

In order to take it easier today I rode my Bionx pedal assist bike. Thursday is the group ride day for the town where I work and their route intersects mine for 3 miles on the way home. The lead groups ride about 23mph. Today we had a headwind.

I came up behind a few stragglers on a hill and overtook them. I reached another group of 6+ at the crest/light. A wizened guy up front lept off their pack and generated a commanding lead. I drafted him for a minute then pulled ahead.

When I saw the main pack a couple hundred yards ahead I set the assist level to max and up-shifted. I caught them pulling out at the bottom of a hill and pulled into the line of cars passing in the left lane. Within 15 seconds I passed them at speeds around 27mph.

I gained a hundred yards into the strongest headwind and continued until I pulled off onto my street.

It was cheating and I did rest on my rest day - but it was a blast.

Well, cheating is OK once in a while. :)

"Cheating" means there are agreed-to rules you are violating. This sounds more like parallel play. You rode your ride within your parameters alongside others who had different parameters. That's not cheating; that's riding YOUR ride.

Once, I rode my Kawasaki 750 right past a whole pack of roadies. Going fast is always fun, but I had no illusions that I was racing them.

They pass me most Thursday evenings. Once or twice I've been able to hang on at up to 25mph. Once I passed them on my single speed w/panniers.
My project manager happened to see me pass the group (he was at a side street in his car).

That's a very sleepy forum. The Bionx is a pedal assist - I pedaled as hard as ever pushing 25mph.

Just think how much faster you would have been on a Ducati.

Sounds like fun. I'd like to pull that on the local hot-shots at the "Tuesday Night World Championships". :)
