I had a slow start this year commuting to work and was delayed by surgery last month. This week I rode Monday and Tuesday, drove Wednesday. Tomorrow I hope to ride a Schwinn that I'm building tonight.
In order to take it easier today I rode my Bionx pedal assist bike. Thursday is the group ride day for the town where I work and their route intersects mine for 3 miles on the way home. The lead groups ride about 23mph. Today we had a headwind.
I came up behind a few stragglers on a hill and overtook them. I reached another group of 6+ at the crest/light. A wizened guy up front lept off their pack and generated a commanding lead. I drafted him for a minute then pulled ahead.
When I saw the main pack a couple hundred yards ahead I set the assist level to max and up-shifted. I caught them pulling out at the bottom of a hill and pulled into the line of cars passing in the left lane. Within 15 seconds I passed them at speeds around 27mph.
I gained a hundred yards into the strongest headwind and continued until I pulled off onto my street.
It was cheating and I did rest on my rest day - but it was a blast.
