Montague electric bike's an 18MPH yiiiipeee!

This is a user review of the Montague electric bicycle.

Too bad the Montague company is said to be ending their production of this electric bike. It uses the reliable Currie electric motor system. It takes off like a 50cc moped. Top speed under battery about 18MPH per spec, don't have a speedo to confirm. This bike also folds.

Handling is very good. The Montague electric bike leans into fast turns like a sportsbike, despite the squarish-looking tires.

Only flaw is the 10 hour dumb-charger. I bought a Soneil 4 amp. smartcharger, which gives me another 10 miles of battery power in an hour. Take the Soneil to the clubhouse, play 8 holes, come back and the Montague ebike's fully charged.

Oh, this bike is too sexy. The holographic-paint job on the wide frame is unique -- it looks like see thru blue plastic, but is actually painted aluminum. Gotta get two locks and a motion sensing alarm or the Montague ebike will disappear.

The Kalloy Uno seatpost only travels 1" and is jouncy.

I replaced the stock seat with a CCM anatomic to prevent pinching my valuable tubes. If you want even more comfy, get the wide CCM Mega Gel touring saddle --- nothing, repeat, nothing is more comfy outside of a sofa. You won't feel bumps, shock seatpost not even necessary.

There are minor tweaks necessary, see posts in the "Power-Assist" Yahoo Group list.

18 MPH? Doesn't that convert to around 30km/h or something? Oh well, I suppose it might be of some use if I cop a monster headwind the day after a 250km ride or something.

I suppose electric bikes might have some validity to assist people with physical disabilities. But I hate 'em anyway. Also motorized scooters. Anything with a motor trying to share my bike lane had better be prepared for a sudden change in direction.

So we've got something with a top speed of 30km/h, and by your calculations, a maximum of 100 miles (but in reality probably considerably less) of endurance before being recharged.

Gee, my bike doesn't need any charge time, has a top speed of 84km/h (OK, 52km/h on the flat) and can go for anything up to 293km (almost 190miles). Oh yeah, mine is also cheaper.

There's a bit of prejudice against electric bikes it would seem. They have their place I think, and some og them are quite well designed and attractive to look at.

However, as for the Montague:

Blech! Another electric bike from the Ad Hoc school of design. Lee Iacocca came up with a design (the ebike) that while still not as beautiful as the pure bicycle, at least looks like it is purpose built.

I have a friend (retired college professor who still teaches part time) who rides an E-Bike. I don't criticize him because he is 69 and has emphysema.
A healthy person on an electric bike is just another motorist.
