General Cycling Discussion - Riding to much?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey! Well this is my first post on bikeforums and I am pretty new to biking also. So right now my question is, should I be biking as much as I am from the start?
I'm 17 years old, in pretty good shape and just got my first road bike 2 days ago. I've ridden it both days now, for about 15-20 miles per day. Now, I'm used to jogging long distances, that's what I did before I decided that I wanted to start biking. I was just wondering if I should maybe take a break? Like Take a day off and go on a run instead of a ride? Any tips or ideas would be much appreciated!
15-20 miles for 2 days in a row is not much ... especially for a 17-year-old in decent shape. But mixing it up with running might not be a bad idea just for some variety.
Listen to your body and if you feel quite tired one day, take the day off.

No, you're not riding too much. There are very many members here who ride upwards of 12 hours per week, and do very high mileages.
The question is, what sort of cycling do you want to do? Are you riding for fun or fitness or both? Do you think you might want to race? Is it important to you to continue running?
If you want to keep your options open and stay as fit as possible, I'd mix it up a bit. Carry on running a couple of days a week, ride the rest of the time and take one or two days a week off. As time goes on you can decide how seriously you want to take the cycling.
Your current distance is fine but since you are using muscles in a different way than you are used to, it may feel like too much the first few times. Ramp up mileage gradually, throw in some hill climbing now and then, and from time to time work on some intervals where you maintain higher speeds a few times during a ride. If all goes well for 3 or 4 months and you like your cycling performance gains, look on line for tips on structured structured training if that kind thing is your cup of tea. There is a ton of free info on training.
Thanks for all of the replies, what should my average mph be right now? Again, the first time I ever rode a road bike was just 3 days ago

Impossible to say. Average speed doesn't just depend on your fitness, but on the terrain, road conditions and wind. Most of the time you need to ride at a speed you feel you can sustain pretty comfortably. Then, as berner suggested above, mix in some stretches where you're going harder for a few minutes at a time. You'll find your average speed, and ability to ride for extended periods, improve quite rapidly.
