I found my Raleigh Golden arrow about 10 miles from home. This Silver record was perhaps 15 miles from home. I am thinking about a door-to-door search for that Record Ace that is leaning against a barn wall waiting to be found.

I don't know much yet except it has an "elite" aluminum hub shell and is likely late 30's (by my guess).

It won't be in it's new home for a couple of weeks yet so we will have to be patient.

It came right after this early Herc by a couple of days. I think they like me.

You're a picky shopper, aren't you?
BTW, what's the threading on those crank bolts? Is it 24tpi Whitworth?

Here is a catalog page (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/retroraleighs/catalogs/1939/pages/15.htm) from Sheldon Brown .com

In an earlier posting, (http://en.allexperts.com/q/Bicycle-Repair-1824/Old-Raleigh-Silver-Record.htm) Sheldon himself suggested that it was likely not a model exported to the US.

- The '39 catalog page says it was painted silver but I would surmise that yours is earlier than 39 based on the chainwheel, so the color could have changed.
- Also it is apparently a chrome-moly model - which I think puts it a rung up from a Golden Arrow!
- What an outstanding snag!

I would like to place my order for one seven-ounce bottle of Frank's Fabulous Bike Finding Formula. I will pay for express shipping.

"You're a picky shopper, aren't you?

Which bolts on what bike? I think the Raleigh is Whitworth and the Herc BSE.

The second ranked Raleigh in the clubman line-up. A legit racer of the era (still a production bike though). It's a 36-38 based on the plating (post '35) and shifter (pre-'39).

I was riding a couple of weeks ago with Lanie. We rode past a very old barn built very close to the road (I am sure the barn came first).

I stopped and leaned over the fence and stuck my head between two barn boards. There was an antique bike (1920's) only 5' from my eyes.

I don't think it's me. I think my area is a bit special because my town was once big and wealthy and the old Yankees like to hang on to stuff. Their kids, not so much. I can't tell you how much of it is going to scrap each day. If I was retired and ebay didn't suck so much I would buy scrap bikes at the side of the road all day.

"WOW! And I have to chase all over the country to find a 1970's vintage Superbe :p

Don't feel bad, I can't find one either and one my size is high on my list for a while now.

Thanks man, Sharing is much of the fun for me.

Finding Vintage Bicycles (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/FREE_SITE_1/FREE_SITE_2_FINDING.htm) is so much fun. I love that old Record and good for the OP.

Door to door search - believe me it works like a charm. Several people have been good enough to email me with the results from their Flyer Campaigns (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/Site%20Contents/Bicycle_Basics/Bicycle_SearchMethod_9_Flyers_Page.htm). Every person who emailed me experienced success the first time out...

I was over at Frank's shop and for a nice country ride this past Friday. His collection is just fantastic. The Hercules has a very cool headbadge.

Just think, in 50+ years our heirs on C&V will be clamoring all over these:

@Frank...need to talk to nlerner, he found mine for me. FWIW I ride 60-64cm old style road frames. A 25" Superbe would be awesome, but I "settled" for the 23" :D Long legs and long arms can be a curse sometimes.

That Herc badge looks like the one on the Skyliner that PastorBob rescued for me, but I know the Skyliner is a 1950's vintage.

I thought the badge on Frank's Hercules was the same as the one I found in the stump dump all those years ago.

That is the one I ended up with. The closest we can pin it down is around 1951-1954. It was a pre Raleigh Herc, but post WW2. Still waiting on some motivation and parts.

The Stump Dump Hercules is definitely a work in progress. As found in 2005 or 2006 (I forget). I even made it into a poster.

You do have a knack for finding some great bikes Pastor Bob. I'm only slightly envious. I'd guess that as I continue trolling CL, hitting swap meets and making my way to tag sales, I'll find some sweet machines such as those which magically appear in your stump dump.

Sorry to be late to the show, but that Silver Record is a fabulous find. Any idea on the frame angles? They look as relaxed as a roadster or later tourist! According to the catalog that Auchen posted, the handlebars are "shallow highgate," but they are certainly close to the Lauterwasser bend. Like the others, I would also be incredibly envious except for A) there is little likelihood of finding one here in the Midwest, and B) they didn't offer them in a 25" size though I noticed in the full 1939 catalog that they offered 26" frame roadsters! I guess tall people were destined to ride upright and slow in those days or else they found a custom builder.

I have four or five English bikes that I think are from the same era. (mostly due to quadrant shifter and forward bend pillars) I will take some measurements and make some comparisons.

My 1890's bike was found with a saddle height of 30" as seen in this image. Exactly the same as my road bikes. I have ridden the Golden arrow a bit and even though it is quite small, isn't that bad.

Most of these bikes were brought back by soldiers and ended up everywhere. Don't kid yourself, these things don't land in my lap. I look for them as much as any amateur has time to.

I don't do any advertizing of check the ads. I just look and talk to people. I recently heard of a very old man who recently lost his wife. He ran a community bike shop for fifty years. The local flippers already cleaned him out and he has no bikes left (so I was told). I am going to pay a visit and spend the day with him and talk or do yard work. I am building a folding carpenters table for the owner of the Silver Record.

I am also hosting a visitor and former BMX racer in my shop who needs a place to stay and a better touring trailer. He is helping me in the shop and also helping a neighbor with home improvements. He brought me a '73 Chas. Roberts with 2nd gen DA and TA 3 pin cranks.

I swim in a pool of bikes and cyclists.
