I just bought a Brooks B-67, non-aged honey-brown, for my porteur. Very cheap, open box but unused. Supposedly it was a return because a customer changed his/her mind. Right...

I'm beginning to have my suspicions something may be defective. I put the thing on my bike, and remarked at how much less stiff it was than my other leather saddles, which include a B17 with big rivets, a few Brooks Pros, and a strange Idéale stamped with Daniel Rebour's signature. I can push on the B67's leather top with my hand and have the leather come in contact with the rails underneath. They are normally about 5/8" away from the leather by design.

I'm a light guy (160lbs, 6'2"), but the saddle has sagged a great deal on its first ride. I'm not sitting on the rails, but it's quite hammock-like. I feel like it could use some holes and a lace, but everybody I talk to tells me to crank the hell out of the tension bolt, something I know is wrong for a new saddle. In fact, as a very light guy who cycles almost exclusively on leather, I've used a tension wrench maybe twice in my entire life.

Anybody have any thoughts? I don't want to ruin it, but I've never had any experience with a saddle this wide.

Do you think I should just return it? Or is this level of softness normal?

I'm not quite sure what you are asking or saying. Can you please elaborate? I just wanted others' experience as to how the B67 differed from the narrower Brooks saddles, because mine seems very soft and pliable in comparison.

tighten the tension bolt some. I have had a couple that were on the soft side. FWIW cows ain't cloned so you will get all different types of leather across the saddle spectrum.
