Touring - San Diego to Florida or Argentina?!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

(I hope this is the right place to post this)

Hello fellow cyclists,

I am finally about to finish my Pacific coast ride from Seattle to San Diego(Currently in LA).
More about that here:
www.wtfnishant.tumblr.com

So now I'm starting to plan the next leg of my trip. Here are my 2 options:

1. Take the Southern Tier route and cross over to Florida. I would have to wait till at least September so the desert heat wont kill me.

2. Keep heading South to Argentina. I'm not sure how safe it is to travel through Mexico; the Northern bits scare me.

I am looking for fellow cyclist that would like to join me on either of these trips. I don't have my heart set so I'm willing to go either way.

About me:

I'm an ok rider. For the most part i take my time to smell the flowers but I can also ride fast. There is a time and place for everything and I determine my pace around that.
Check out my CouchSurfing profile for more about me!
http://www.couchsurfing.org/people/np2fast/

I try to camp as much as possible but do occasionally throw in CouchSurfing, motels and whatever else into the mix.

I have no deadline so hopefully I can find someone to join who is on the same boat. Money wise I have enough but I still prefer to travel on the cheap. But I do love to eat and have a soft spot for good beer.

Well, contact me if your are interested!!!

Later.

Consider flying over the border, or perhaps to Costa Rica or Columbia,
and restarting there.

I'm Old :50: so will be staying where I can get my Meds.

If you have the time and the money, head to Argentina! I just finished doing Argentina to Ecuador, it was awesome and epic.

I think Mexico can be OK as long as you are careful with your route choice. I spoke with many cyclists who had come down through Mexico and loved it/ had no problems. Unfortunately I also know a young woman who was kidnapped and nearly killed on a bike tour in Mexico. So do your homework if you are heading that way.

If i do Mexico I would much rather prefer a partner even though I love solo touring.

best I can offer is to buy a few beers for you when you get to St Aug Fl using the southern tier..we have quite a few ST guys show up here at the end of the crossing. Oldest one was Ken Patten (85 years old)..did it solo!

I have done a good part of Mexico and feel it is entirely safe. Sure there are safety issues which are mentioned in mass media all the time, but over all I have felt same during the months I have spent in both large cities, small towns and empty Mexican highways.
