Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Surly Pugsley -- anybody got one?

I'm thinking of setting up with a Surly Pugsley frame but normal tires such a marathon 700x45. Any thoughts on this??

Primary purposes will be commuting, touring and generally being different.

I really don't see why you'd want to unless you'll use the fat tires at least part of the time. The frame design has concessions made due to the fat tires, like the 100mm wide bottom bracket, offset frame, etc. that could be avoided with a decent touring bike or something like a Salsa Fargo.

I'm looking at fatbikes right now, and they're so much fun to ride that I don't see why you'd want to run "skinny" 45's on one. They're like a pedal-powered monster truck and make you grin like a little kid when you're on a ride.

I started looking at this because it's the only rigid frame I found that can take disc brakes, 700x45 tires, racks and fenders. Perhaps something better is out there but I haven't found it yet...

The Pugsley is a great ATB as it is so why would you want to put a "skinny" tire on it?

For the Op, I think he's "purposes will be commuting, touring and generally being different" as well as being in Cananda when everyone else has put up their bikes he can ride fatties on it as an awesome snow bike.

Karate Monkey?
Fits 29er 2.55" tires. Rigid disc frame. Takes a rear rack if you use an offset mount.

As others have stated, there's a few offerings from Salsa and Surly that would meet the requirements of fitting 700x45, racks, and fenders, including the Salsa Fargo I mentioned earlier. There's probably others as well.

Without the weirdness that the Pugsley requires, like the extra wide BB and a wheelset built around 2 rear hubs.

Thank you all. Had never heard of Salsa but will investigate. Also REI has such a touring bike. Seeing at the Pug on a 200km ride makes me think I should just go with big tires! Definitely different.

I didn't see that in the description. They tell people not to run disc brakes and racks, but that's due to a clearance issue at the rear disc placement and the necessity to use a standoff and a long bolt to mount it up. It puts additional torque on the mount eyelet if you load a ton of weight on the rack, but I've got a couple friends who use similar setups on other frames without problems (hauling 20 - 25 pound daily commuter loads on their bikes.)

With a single eyelet, you'd need to either double mount rack and fender on the same one (not suggested) or P-clip your fender mounts (do this.)

My mistake, sorry. It was discs and racks as you said.
This is from the Karate Monkey description on the Surly site:
"One more thing: Surly does not recommend the use of racks and disc brakes at the same time on the Karate Monkey. A rack will not clear the disc caliper without jury-rigging the leg outboard, and this will put stress on the mount, potentially breaking it. If you take nothing else from reading this, remember: No rack and disc brakes simultaneously on this frame. Get it? Got it? Good."
Either way, I want both so the KM is out for me.
The Vaya and Troll are very interesting and I will pursue them. Maybe get a Pugsley another year. It would be nice just to have one!

I got passed at a triathalon today by an old guy on a Puglsey. I was cranking at 18mph on 700x23's and he went around me like nothing. :)

Very impressive, looked like fun.

I have a pugs and I had a set of standard wheels built for it so I could use 2.25 Nokia studded tires. That allows me to take one bike and two sets of wheels somewhere and ride Winter trails with the pugs tires and swap to studded tires and ride on icy roads or other icy conditions. With the offset front wheel you'll need to use a rear wheel kind of build even for the front. The pugs along with a second wheel set is a nice thing and very versatile. I do have a "regular" mtn bike but this way I can just take one bike...

Novara Safari fits all those needs. Comes w/42's and can easily fit wider. It comes with v-brakes but has caliper mounts and disc appropriate wheels.

Surly offers a disc LHT that can take 45c w/o fenders, 42c with fenders.

I have zero use for such a bike, but I want one anyway.

Bikes with these really fat tires are ideal for a post apocalyptic world when there are no roads.

After reading the description of the Moonlander on Surly's site, I can picture it complete with a gun rack and a trailer to haul the carcass back home!

Ogre seems like pretty much the same frame as the Karate Monkey, but it accepts rack and fender at same time.
