I just came back from a five day trip across the Icelandic highlands, the Sprengisandur route, to be precise, and I thought I'd share some photos I took along the way.
This is the trial run:
And this is the main trip:

Wow! There is something awe inspiring about the bleakness of the landscape.
Truly "Trekking" and not highway touring.
Thanks for sharing

What a gorgeous place! Thanks for sharing, looks like a great trip.

HOLY CRAP! Look at the size of the rocks on some of the photos! What am I doing? I planned a complete touring bike build around a 700c frame and wheels.
Ah shucks, I don't know if I should change my mind now or not.

That looks like a fantastic trip. The photos you shared make me want to go there. It looks like a beautiful place to me. Thanks!

Now I want to tour Iceland. I think the Icelandic Bureau of Tourism should hire you.

Did you see any elves out there?
08-14-11, 02:20 AM
Sorry, no Elves. A couple of Dutch guys, some Russians, a couple of French guys - but no Elves.
It's still easy to see how your imagination could run wile when you are alone up there. Inventing faeries and trolls seems natural when you are wandering around in the fog, lost among the boulders or in the lava field.
My original plan would have taken me deeper into the interior, but on my second day - a couple of weeks ago - I hit my ankle on a big stone. It swelled up until I had a tennis ball sized lump on my ankle, so I had to head back home to let it recover. Then, last week, I took a bus up to the northern part of Iceland - a town called Akureyri - and rode across the highlands heading south.

As you say in Icelandic: Vá! Awesome pics, makes me wish the ferry from Norway was still running so I could easily hop over and do a bike tour.

Nice! would love to ride iceland. can you find geothermal features with any reliability for bathing and relaxing ?
are there maps and books of publicly accessible 'hot springs' of iceland like in the USA?

I have seen such a book, in Icelandic. I haven't really looked for it in English, but I would think it must have been translated. There are quite a few locations known around the country which have geothermal pools suitable for bathing; some are very popular, others are hardly known. Some are well accessible, others would require you to go far off the beaten track.
That looks pretty amazing. What a place. I guess I couldn't bring my hammock though. Does your country have any trees at all?!

Trees are for wuzzes! Real Men sleep on rocks!
It's going to be hard to find trees suitable for hanging a hammock around here. They tend to be to small and grow to close to each other. Besides, it's always windy here and when it rains it can rain upwards... ;)

Amazing! I want to go!!! Thanks for sharing.
