Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - There IS a downside to losing a lot of weight....

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Yeah, the cost of getting a whole new wardrobe....
Some folks reward themselves with a new bike; I rewarded myself with new clothes.
I'm a cheapskate; I've worn my big clothes for as long as I could before JCPenney had this huge 80% clearance today.
Funny thing is, several people have noticed my weight loss and instead of mocking my cycling outfit, they are now asking me about bicycling ONLY because they want to lose weight. Most of them said they would like to ride, but they don't want to be killed, and complained that all bicycle seats are too small.
Even one person said that "packing a bike in the car to go somewhere safer to ride" is completely ridiculous.
I've decided that the best answer to everyone's questions is "just do it".

The secret, at least for casual wear, is secondhand or thrift. Donate them back when you shrink out of them.

Yes, I joined the Tuesday evening WCBC group, as they are very close to where I live. They have A, B, C, & D rides, the D ride being the slowest. I tried out the D ride twice, and moved up to the C ride, which is about 20 miles and averages 15MPH. I expected to see snobby/cliquey riders, but they are very nice and encouraging folks. Most of the riders in my group are at least 5-8 years older than I am, which makes me feel better.
Riding with a group is a lot more satisfying than riding alone. There is that feeling of acceptance, belonging, competition, and security. They are very patient and go out of their way to make sure I know what's going on, as I am the only deaf rider in the club.

We have been donating clothes, but this time my son will be inheriting all my shirts, as he is now bigger than I am. He is mentally disabled, and does not mind wearing hand-me-downs.

I meant shop at Goodwill for jeans and stuff like that.

I have scored some great deals at thrift stores and Goodwills. The nice thing about traveling is checking out the local second hand shops. The best one so far was a place in rural Minnesota. No prices posted. I picked out a couple of pair of jeans and three t shirts. I walked up to the counter and the woman said "how about $2.00?" I said that sounded just fine. Initially I was leaving off as many clothes as I bought as I gave things away as soon as they were too big.
I went so hog wild on second hand shopping that I have too many replacement clothes. Though I do need a good jacket and haven't found one I like yet.

I sew, crochet, and knit, so I make most of my own stuff, including my bike gloves, shorts and jerseys.

There is a Jim in my group, but I don't know his last name. Very tall, mid-60's, has a blue Trek hybrid, just bought a new Trek roadie recently. That him?
PM me for any further talk about other riders.

Way to go. I am looking forward to the day when I no longer need to go to the fat people store. It's within reach. I can fit into 3x shirts now, down one more and I'll be golden.
As an aside... I look utterly ridiculous in the 6x's I wore at my peak. Back then they were tight, though. Now they're like mumu's.
