Hi everyone.

I need some advice. I currently live in Utah. 1 year from now, my employer will give me a 1 month paid sabbatical. I'm currently looking for a location in the western US to spend this time.

The wife and I both ride road and mountain bikes. We also love to hike, and do some motorcycling...yes, she rides her own motorcycle too. Some not too expensive golf and a good place to run our dog would be awesome too.

We prefer road biking on roads that aren't too busy and/or have a nice shoulder. We're intermediate at best mountain bikers...so we aren't looking for hard-core at all.

Does a place like this exist? Any ideas on ways to start researching this would be awesome.

(mods, if this is the wrong forum for this, please move)

Hawaii. Nice wide roads, some downhill riding (Down-mountain, actually. A volcano). Golfing there too.

I love Hawaii, but getting 4 bicycles, golf clubs, and a dog there would be problematic.

I'm thinking about somewhere in California, Oregon or Washington.

There are lots of places in Oregon (and I'm sure Idaho, California, and Washington too.)

Bend Oregon has it all. I do believe golf is a bit expensive there. Lots of trails to mountain bike, nice roads for road rides, many different golf courses, and places you can ride motorcycles.

Wherever you decide, be sure and post for suggestions on routes to try.

Why not Colorado?
A week or two each in any of these: Boulder/Ft. Collins, Summit County, Crested Butte, Durango. July or August.

I'm just soliciting ideas. Colorado is certainly an option, although we're thinking somewhere near the coast is probably more likely since Colorado will be a lot like Utah, and we're looking a different experience.

We met a lady who'd spent part of her summer vacation riding around Montana. I'd look at doing something similar, except perhaps dip down into Wyoming and Idaho -- come into Yellowstone from Cody, go south out through the Tetons, up and over Teton Pass. Stop and hike, climb a mountain or three, go fishing for a few days, and just in general have a blast!

I think my ideal trip would be to get a mountain or road bike ride in every morning. Walk 18 holes of golf in the after noon. Then take my dog for a hike/swim after dinner.
