General Cycling Discussion - Water bottle

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The skinny: I was sitting on a park bench taking a water break the other day. Stupidly, I rode off with the bottle still on the bench.
Usually I go to my local bike shop but they were closed so I went to Dicks Sporting Goods. After 10 minutes of wandering around, I didn't find it in the biking section. I ask an associate and he said they do not carry them.
Luckily I live near a shopping mall mecca and went to Sports Authority. The guy there tells me "why buy a water bottle when you can just pop in a Poland Spring and bend your wire cage so it won't pop out." Oh, and they also don't sell water bottles there apparently.
So that got me wondering, what do most of you drink from? A reusable bottle or a disposable?

Bottled water has far more contaminants in it than most municipal waters. Then there is the landfill factor.
Aside from that, I use a regular water bottle (reusable) because I can drink from it one-handed while riding.

reusable stainless steel. I try to avoid aluminum/plastic liner ones, and plastic bottles altogether.

and plastic bottles altogether.
HDPE (high density polyethylene) is pretty safe. That's another thing about bottled water. It often comes in PET bottles, which will leach things into the water.

Just go to Walmart/Target -- they have bottles.
I carry 3 of the 32oz green Gatorade bottles with me, got em at Dicks for $4 each in the football section.

Camelbak Podium Big Chill, I love the jet valve and it looks good too.

Reusable.
But having done something similar I went to a convenience store and bought a 24oz (IIRC) bottle of Gatorade with the twist to drink cap. I ended up refilling it a few times before disposal.

Reusables with tap water.
Speaking of which, most department stores carry that sort of thing: http://www.target.com/s?keywords=water+bottle&searchNodeID=1038576|1287991011&ref=sr_bx_1_1&x=0&y=0
I'm all for going to your LBS, and sporting goods stores, but in this case, just go to the nearest box store :)

Municipal tap water is certainly tested more often,
than corporate bottled stuff..

Since stainless is less forgiving and won't crush to get into a bottle holder (I have a Camelbak Groove Stainless, with built-in filter for easy refilling at any muni water tap), do you use a somewhat flexible frame bottle holder?

20oz pop bottles will generally stay put if wedged in upside-down.

Reusable, INSULATED water bottle...................from..............................DICK'S :). They have them in our store. They were near the check out. Dick's bike department is quite pathetic. So is their fly fishing department(shelf).
The bike department hangs their riding jerseys up about 8 feet high so you can't get to them. Huh?
I NEVER buy bottled water. That is one of the dumbest fads I have ever seen( in the USA). Now, in Mexico I buy them quite frequently ;)
Best $10 I've spent in a long time.

^ Amazon has Polars for $8. :)
I use the 20oz. Gatorade sport bottles (twist top), get about 2-3 months of use out of them. Cost $1, and they come full of Gatorade. Fit the bottle cage just fine.

I'm a big fan of stainless steel bottles, and most of my riding is slow-paced, so taking the time to stop and drink isn't a big deal. On a hot day, the water gets warm very quickly though.
I did buy two plastic insulated bottles for hot weather and for faster rides, when I want to drink while riding.

If you're not one for looks, wrap it in a wet sock :)

Yes, the podium by Camelbak. After using these, I can't go back to regular water bottles. The dripping leaking tops drive me crazy.
These have a nice no drip valve and a closed valve position.

Sigg water bottles. I've got more than I can get on three bikes from my backpacking days.

Hang around the roadside at the Grand Tours,
the Racers Throw them to the side of the road when emptied..
and be like the natives, bring a big picnic, with lots of wine.
Just go to Walmart/Target -- they have bottles.

I have a camelbak podium chill that sees little use since I started doing longer rides where it wasn't enough water. Now I use a Dakine Nomad with 3L reservoir..fully filled and with not too hot weather it keeps me decently hydrated up to about 6 hours.

You could have tried 2 podium chill bottles. I've done many rides 6+ hours and it's hard to think that one would have a problem finding a place to refill the bottles.
But this is a water bottle thread not a bottle vs hydration pack thread. ;)

Lol that would not be enough water, and no water isn't free here like in the US. Moreover, I would rather not have to stop at any stores because most of the time they are quite a bit out of the way. There are not nearly as many gas stations here as in the US. Actually, along the 105km/65mi route I took on my last ride there was exactly one grocery store, and no gas stations. It was also Sunday, so the grocery store was closed.
In the mountains and hills there are streams, but I don't want to get sick just because I didn't bring enough clean water with me.
I like my Camelbak podium, it is a good water bottle that I would recommend. I wasn't trying to do any sort of vs thread, just explaining why I rarely use it any more.

In the summer time, reusable insulated bottles.
The Gatorade 20 (or maybe 24) oz disposable bottles work great, too, they fit the bottle cages and top is convenient.
I was riding a good while back, and a guy noticed me using the Gatorade bottles. Then he pointed out "That's what I used at PBP last time." So I felt better about it then!

Stainless steel is real so that's what my Kleen Kanteens water bottles are made from.
I feel really guilty if I have to use a throw away plastic bottle.
no motor?

Reusable and tap water.
This. I got mine from REI and they're great.
I use the Polar insulated ones. In the Texas heat a non-insulated bottle fully frozen will just be warm water in half an hour.

speaking of SS bottles, I have a few that seems to have rust inside. any good way of cleaning? I also have a few plastic sports bottles that I use for biking. After awhile they start to smell, so I tried bleaching them but it still didn't seem to get rid of the smell. Any solutions?

Try leaving them sit overnight filled with vinegar to freshen them up.
If that fails try leaving them in direct sunlight , top off, for a few days to let the sun kill all the bacteria & mold.

For you stainless steel bottle lovers. I absolutely love my 24 oz Hydroflask. It's insulated, and keeps water cold for hours in the hot sun. Sport caps are available, if you don't like the screw top. Fantastic quality. Fits perfectly in a bottle cage.
