Northeast - Bike Shipping from NYC
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Moving from NYC to San Francisco. Has anyone had experience shipping a standard-size bike cross-country? How much should I expect to pay? Are there any NYC bike shops that can assist with packing and shipping the bike?
A standard bike box will cost about $100 shipped UPS. If you get the box down below their oversize by removing the rear wheel & being clever with the handlebars & fork, it'll cost a lot less. Size is a bigger factor than weight when sending a bike. Check out their web site.
There are many shops in NYC which will supply a box & pack it up. However, there are many bike shops in NYC. You need to phone around.

i shipped a road bike LA to Brooklyn via Fedex 2 months ago. Cost was $75. IT was in a new-bike box from a local bike store. I paid a local bike mechanic in LA $35 to box it up. The Fedex cost was right on the edge of costing about $25 more based on weight/measurement, so I was happy to get it down to the $75 charge (which at first i thought was outrageous.) I took it to 2 different Fedex locations trying to beat the price thinking one of them was high but the 2nd one was same price. I weighed and measured the box myself at home to check it out, and the measurement of the standard new-bike box i had was just slightly OVER the maximum size to get the $75 price but the clerk looked the other way, it was about 1" over.
It might be worth looking into Amtrak and Greyhound as well. They'll take a large box (with a bike in it) from one station to another; no home pickup or delivery.
