Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I just purchased a set of SRAM Red chainrings for a SRAM crank/Quarq power meter I have; the rest of the group is Dura Ace 7800. I found it kind of amusing that the chainrings had stamped on the back "SRAM Chain Only." Hmmm...I can use a SRAM chain with Dura Ace, but not the other way around...

So for due diligence sake, is there some federal report I've missed regarding the use of SRAM Red chain rings with any other Shimano/SRAM compatible chain, in this case a CN-7801, rather than a SRAM manufactured chain? I don't want to inadvertently throw the cosmos out of alignment and end life as we know it by using a non-SRAM chain unless there is good reason not to.

I've used SRAM chains on both Shimano & Campy drivetrains for the master link, and to get away from that antiquated manually-installed pin. I can't think of a reason to use a Shimano chain.

I've used Wipperman connectors with Shimano chains for years. Never had an issue, but I do normally carry a spare, just in case.

Maybe that's what happened in his last TdF.

Maybe it's what jammed up Andy Schleck in 2010 too!

Agreed. I think there is a chain conspiracy that's run afoul!

I'm nearly certain Andy was using an all SRAM drivetrain but it was pilot error that caused his problem.

I think you are right. If he was using a Shimano chain I'm sure that's all we'd have heard about as the cause of the problem.

BTW, I should have added a "wink" at the end of my post to indicate my sarcasm. Andy jammed his own chain, not the other way around.
