Sunday I took a ride out to a garden centre a few miles from home and came back via a bridleway I hadn't tried before. It's pretty much pure clay (Faversham was once known for its bricks) so is sodden and slippery in the shade with rock hard ruts in the sun. The bridleway appears to have been regularly used by SUV's or farm vehicles creating six inch deep ruts. I found the pedals kept brushing the sides if I travelled down the ruts but I ended up in them if I tried riding between them at any speed due to diagonally crossing ruts.

Any tips on traversing this sort of terrain?

I hate those ruts, you can ride through them at all.
Tell your local council that the bridleway is obstructed by ruts, maybe they will repair the right of way.
Take some photos of them for the record.

I gave this one a few days before replying...

when I ride in suv ruts, I like to shift my suv into 4-wheel drive. Low gear works well for me.
