Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Craigslist Ad for Vintage Raleigh Collegiate - what do you think?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Amusing ad - I actually wrote back to the guy to point out his issues.

I don't think he could even get that price here in NYC, where prices can be ridiculous.

1. It's a Schwinn, not a Raleigh
2. Low end Schwinns like that are a dime a dozen. I got mine for free at the city dump.
3. Needs work. Even a perfect Collegiate is not worth $250.
4. Pass on this one.
Did you notice that the bike is not really a Raleigh and also is not a 3 speed? The highest sale price for a Schwinn Collegiate that I could find was $199 and that bike was minty.

And I thought Boston area prices on bikes were ridiculous. I guess the seller can dream...

I would say the person who wrote the ad and has the bike needs to go back to school. He or she can learn to read the head badge and decals on the frame, learn to use the internet to research what things have sold for and some basic math so the numbers from that research will make sense to him.
Just another junk ad taking up space on CL.

So...you are telling me I got ripped off?

Only if you paid anything above $30 for it, as shown. While Doohickie can get them from the town dump, there isn't that alternative here in the Detroit area...but I have bought a '78 single-speed for $5, and after cleaning and new tires, resold for $125. But that bike was pristine.
