Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - You Guys Were Right - Clydsdale/Roadbike Love Blooming...

Reading all the posts about Clydes that love their roadbikes made me want to get one, too. I mean who doesn't want to go faster, right? After spending a month with a Cannondale R800 that was pushing me towards needing physical therapy and possibly traction, I decided to change course and check out some "plush" bikes.

I rode a Specialized Roubaix, and although it was more comfortable than the Cannondale, it didn't "speak to me". However, I fell in love with this Trek Pilot 2.1 within the first quarter mile. It is smooth, fast, and oh so comfortable! In fact, the taller/closer bars make it even more comfortable than my hybrid! I've only ridden it a couple miles, but so far I'm :love:.

It's the 10-speed/triple crank version (which I definitely need), and has Ultegra/105 hardware. Check it out!

A couple weeks after I got my 1973 Schwinn Varsity I found out those skinny racing tires will fit into some sewer grates, and both the bike and I flipped :crash:. I'm sure you're not suggesting I do that again ;), but what am I supposed to flip?

They are talking about flipping the stem so that it places the handlebars in a more race like looking position. Do it if you feel like being cool and fitting in while satisfying the cool forum people but you don't need it. Gina didn't flip her stem and she kicks the snot out of plenty of dudes on high end race rigs with flipped stems! The Pilot is a fast comfy bike:thumb:

As Mr. Beanz noted, there is no need to flip you stem. It sounds like your bike is pretty comfortable the way it is.

Her Pilot is the 06, Full carbon full Ultegra 10 speed (07 had a Bontrager crank). Original price was $2800 but we got "still new last years" model for $2200 plus the benefit of the Ultegra crank.

Her bike was equipped with Race Lite wheels. She finally toasted the rear wheel at 13,000 miles. Cracks around the spoke holes, classic Bontrager issue. I had a Deep V on my Cannondale with a rather new low mileage Dura Ace hub. I swapped it over to her bike then built a new Deep V Ultegra wheel for my Cannondale.

I told her to give the V a try and if she thought it was too heavy, I'd tear it down and build a lighter wheel for her. But she doesn't seem to have a problem with the Deep V. She says it's a much better wheel than the wimpy Bontrager Race Lite she had on there previously.:D

You can see the Deep V in the picture of her on the bike. She now has over 14,000 miles on the bike and likes more than when we first got it. :thumb:

learned the "flip it" phrase from mr beanz about two weeks ago. shortly after that i learned all pictures need to be drive side, stems at 6 o'clock, crank at 30 degrees, stem flipped, no saddle bags, and background has to be a white garage door

Looks like about a 17 degree stem. Flipping it will make the bike FAST! It would be uncomfortable for our OP that way, I'm guessing, but it would also be so fast he'd have to hang on for dear life.

it wont be any faster it will just look faster and thats what really counts in the internet.

btw i wouldnt want to ruin a good picture by photoshopping my bike on it :(

It's really a lot faster when you flip the stem upside down, at least if you're going pretty quickly to begin with. Remember, air resistance is the cube of your speed, so anything you can do to get more aerodynamic pays big dividends. This isn't just theory alone (although that's all you really need to verify this) ... I have a +17 stem and flipped it to a -17 one day. It was dramatically faster. Aerodynamics aside, I think it's a more powerful position, too. But it's a less comfortable one, and my stem is upright once again.

Sure you could, Gina does!:D You'd love and a great part of it is that the hardcore riders are up there and contrary to what most believe, they are the most encouraging riders.

Great pics! I toured California for 8 days in 2003 and loved it, but Washington is on the short list of states I've yet to visit. Illinois has mostly boring terrain, but Mother Nature has other ways of demonstrating her power. These are from this morning's thunderstorm, around 9:15am:

How is the lake front for riding? I'd imagine it would be pretty scenic?

You should definitely come to WA, and bring your bike. Aim for the end of July or the beginning of August, because it's usually nice then. We have fantastic but short summers.

its insanely crowed, but for a leisure ride (slow ride) the eye candy is unbeatable. just make sure you have your brakes in perfect working order.
