Touring - Ortlieb High Vis Back Roller Classics and Rack Choices

I just purchased the Ortlieb High Vis Back-Roller Classic Waterproof Cycle Panniers
from Probikekit.com using code velonews10 to get 10% off, came to around 113usd for the set. One of the better deals I have seen since I have been researching panniers.



I now need to buy a rear rack for the panniers, I will mainly use them for commuting to work but next year I am planning a short week long credit card tour.

Any suggestions on racks?

I am looking for reliable, strong and affordable. I know Tubus are the top of the line but do I need to the top of the line for light credit card touring and commuting?

I have the same Pannier's front and back and use a Axiom Journey for the rear rack and have no problems with them.

loaded touring as well as grocery and laundry getting.

I use an Ortlieb Logo., with that rack's rear mount, I can shift the hooks forward,
on the bag's tracks

,and get the heel clearance I want.

I have an Ergo front rack, too..

High Vis? , is that Brighter than Yellow or Orange?

Isn't that the price for one pannier and not a pair?

For something as big as a Back-rolller, I'd go with a Tubus Cargo or similar. Not today, maybe, but some day, you're going to fill those big boys up, and you'll want a rack you're sure can handle the load.

I use a Tortec Expedition on my crosscheck commuter and it's a great rack...pretty light with plenty of room on it. 35kg max weight

The price listed for Ortleibs is typically for one pannier. I went to the web site because the price you mentioned was so inexpensive and next to the price the quantity listed is one.

BTW, I also have the Tortec expedition rack on a couple bikes and it is an excellent rack for the price.

Not true.

Ortlieb (and most other brand) rear panniers are normally sold in pairs, not individually. Thus, they are priced as pairs.

It even says "supplied as a pair" in item description in the OP's referenced ad.

The velonews10 coupon no longer works, and when it did it made the total ~$117, not 113.

Many if not most shopping and city errand panniers are sold individually, but most panniers sold for touring are sold by the pair. My Ortlieb Frontroller Classic and Backroller Classic panniers were sold as pairs and there was a pair in each box.

so ignore high vis part of statement. I own a Orange/black set.
it is not bright but better than black.

I am sorry if I worried you Jan. I didn't mean too - my mistake. Thanks seeker and Tourist for setting me straight about that. I didn't see the part where it said sold in pairs and the 1 in the quantity box confused me.

For commuting, most Axiom racks work good. For light touring, it depends how much stuff you are carrying. Most racks are given static loading weight (which is like hundreds of pounds); BUT you are not touring just by standing still! Dynamic loading weight is more realistic, which accounts for up/down and side to side movement with loaded panniers and the bike moving and these are the main causes of rack failure on the stays or connection points. Unfortunately, very few manufacturers list this. Most of the top dog racks can sustain a dynamic load weight of about 50 to 60lbs. Cheaper racks can bear 1/4 to 1/2 of those weights, so you need to know how much total weight your panniers will weight on the scale for light CC touring. Most people get away with 30lbs for both panniers (that includes the panniers weight as well), so cheaper racks are ok. For fully loaded camping tours, more heavy duty racks are a must.
