So, I need a new seatpost and saddle but know nothing about them. If anyone could recommend some, that would be great. I just know nothing about them or how to install the post and saddle. Thanks for any help.

diameter, application (what type of bike / riding do you do) budget, color, length etc - more info needed.
For installing, undo the bolt / clamp. take the old one out, put the new one in, and do up the bolt / clamp

there are 2 main things to consider.
The saddle has to fit your ass, and the post the frame.
Step one is to find out the required seatpost diameter. If the bike is recent production you might find that on a company's website spec. sheet for that bike, or if you post the exact brand and model here someone here might know. Otherwise it's either measure or trial and error.
Saddles are much easier, but there are zillions of choices.
All in all, your best bet would be to visit the local shop and get both fitted properly. I find that saddles are like shoes, something I don't like to buy over the net, unless I'm buying an identical version of one I have and like already.

odoshter: The seatpost diameter is often stamped on the seatpost where it inserts into the frame. Pull it out and have a look. If you need to measure you will need to do so with some precision; seatposts are sized on 0.2mm increments. You can spend a little or a lot on a new one. Same with a saddle.

I guess my New York is showing. When someone asks about a seatpost and saddle, I automatically assume the originals are stolen.

If it is MIA, then go to a bike shop and have them measure to tell you the right seat post size you need. Seat posts come in 0.2mm increments, getting the EXACT right size is important!

Well I removed the seatpost from my varsity because it was very rusty. So I didn't see the measurements. I guess I'll just take it to my LBS which is conveniently located across the street.
