Bicycle Mechanics - "New" Sturmey 3 Speeds IGH

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hi,
IGH newbie here. Is there any mechanical difference between the new sturmey AWC and SRC3?
All I can tell is that one is steel ( AWC-kinda raw looking) and one is aluminium (SR3C -polished) I plan on using this with the classic trigger shifter for now.
Thanks
Kevin

I don't think there is, it's probably just a matter of the hub shell. The corresponding freewheel hubs ( the AW and XFR-3 respectively) are mechanically identical apart from the shell, I see no reason why their coaster-brake counterparts shouldn't be.
Thanks, appreciate it. Now I just have to pick a rim and I'm all set.
I've been thinking that I might build a sa s30 into a SS/fixie bike. Good idea?

Did you mean to say S3X? If so, good idea. I love mine.:thumb:
Yeah, well, BD doesn't have them in stock, and I'm a little iffy about a fixed IGH since IGH's seem a little fragile as they are, without the added torque of a fixie system.
Plus, the s30 has a wider range IIRC. Middle gear is direct drive and there's one over drive and one drop out. Makes a lot of sense.

Forgive me, I missunderstood. I have no idea what an s30 is. Never heard of it .
Fragile? Hardly. I weigh 245 and none of my Sturmey hubs have failed me yet, including the fixie.
Edit: A search reveals the s30 is nothing other than what most of us would call an SRC3.

An S3X will take a screw on freewheel . it's threaded on the high spots of the spline.
so you can run it that way, adlai.

True, but if you want a freewheeling hub anyway, starting with an S3X hardly makes sense as it's twice the price, and top gear direct.

All depends on what ratios you need .75 is 2nd, .63 is the low..
I have 2 Bromptons 1 an AW3 UK hub, the other a newer TW made BSR
the 3 ratios still the .75 and the 1.33
They got another one made for their 6 speed half step, BWR, wider difference %.
White Ind has a Dos Freewheel , you could put one on the S3X, and have a quick range shift.
for 6 gears. different approach..

Right. Exactly.
But seriously, IGH hubs seem to subject small parts to more torque than external derailleurs. Add in braking forces like the s3x and that's a recipe for disaster.

My reasons too. I'm putting this on my fixed bike and was waffling back and forth between the s3x and src. The coaster hub has 2nd as direct drive (where I spend most of my time anyway) and it's half the price. Plus I can use the classic trigger shifter.

where is the best place to buy an already laced up rear wheel with a sturmey archer three speed hub (non fixie)?

Check with your LBS.

I wanted one from the interwebs for cheap...

AEBike builds wheels. (or farms it out or whatever) Shouldn't be more that $200.00 with a decent rim.
