Commuting - Slimmer fitting bike shorts (not cycling shorts)

Hey guys, after riding in regular cargo shorts, and other types of shorts out there on my bike when I ride to a friend's place or something, I noticed that I need something that's a little more form fitting. Sometimes my shorts will get caught on my back waterbottle and cause me to try to get myself free while paying attention to the road. I suppose it's not that big a deal, but it would be nice to avoid it all together.

I'm basically looking for shorts that look very similar to regular shorts, or even MTB shorts. but are a little slimmer in the legs. I want to be able to wear them around as if I weren't wearing any sort of obvious cycling clothing. I've currently got a pair of Pearl Izumi cycling shorts, and are great, and I can wear over other shorts, but do you guys have any suggestions for what I'm looking for?

They don't necessarily have to be padded, as I suppose I can invest in some sort of liner also. I also don't want them to be unbelievably short either, if you know what I mean.

I got a pair of the cotton cigarette cut shorts and love them. They may be a little short for you, but they have some other options too. Nice people and nice clothes.

Some of those knickers may actually be what I'm looking for on that site...

Perhaps what I'm looking for are slightly "baggier" knickers?

Hiking shorts worked fine for me. The cut and material with most is almost identical to MTB shorts. I used to wear them with regular cycling shorts underneath and they've held up fine for over a year with daily washing. The nice thing is that they're much more abundant than cycling shorts and I've always been able to find at least one brand on clearance at any given time at my local sporting goods store. You shouldn't have to pay more than $30 for a well made pair on clearance and that's certainly better than the $70-100 you'd pay for cycling-specific shorts.

I have personally found that cutting off dress pants or regular trousers (think Dickies) has been the best way to get slimmer shorts. Shorts that are designed as such from the start are cut differently, baggier generally, and they flail all about. When I was in high school I used to find lost trousers all the time ( I was a janitor in work study program) and since I have longer legs for my height, I would take the pants with the right size waist and cut them off for shorts.
