My daughter called today to tell me her bike was stolen outside one of her classes on the SJSU campus this p.m. First day back. She saw it as she passed the bike rack on the way to class and when she got out of class it was gone, along with the lock. This just sucks on so many levels I can't begin to tell you.
Isn't it hard enough that students are getting hammered in the wallet with the rise in tuition, etc.
Then there is a creep walking across campus cherry picking someones bike. If I lived closer to campus, I'd be down there ready to pounce on this coward/scum tool. Not enough eyes out there to keep these vermin from ripping off kids who are trying to do the right thing.
I lose faith everyday this S@#^ goes on. Just have to vent. thx.

What kind of lock? Just curious.

Sorry about your daughters bike. Its unfortunate that colleges seem to be the place where thieves prowl for bikes. When I commuted on my Miyata I worried every single day about losing it.

Are you looking for a replacement for your daughter?

No need to replace her, just teach her to use a proper ulock

Hi,

The bike was secured with a cable (coil type) and masterlock to the rack outside a class.

The bike was an Electra cruiser Minty Green with fat white sidewalls and black seat with floral pattern on it. I know a U-lock might have slowed the jerk down somewhat.

In hindsight, this was a gift we gave to the underbelly of society. Lesson learned.:notamused:

My son is starting Davis next month. We have been warned: cheap bike and u-lock.

We found him a $35 Specialized Rock Jumper in very decent shape on Craigslist. No suspension, no frill, but solid.

The lock costs almost as much.

Haha. Nice.

If he desires to ride a road bike, there's also a bunch of road bikes up here that are typically not stolen even though they are only locked by a U-Lock. Been here for almost 4 years (whoo!) and still lucky *knock on wood*

I ride my Fuji Newest 1.0 (Tiagra/105 split) or a BD bike with better components daily and I haven't anything stolen.

The key up here is not to be an idiot. u-lock & cable at the minimum, and lock to a permanent structure, keep it in plain view (We have some shady places to lock), and not to leave it locked up at night, unless in the first rack in front of the library...

Granted I do just be an ass and bring my bike to class occasionally, it's just being smart of how you like it.

Been there, so I share your frustration. The ski areas used to put a small electronic sender in a ski binding on several really expensive pairs of skis and leave them out by the ticket area during the morning rush. The would inevitably be stolen. The cops would be waiting out at the ski area entrance, pick up the sending signal and bust the guys. They caught several theft rings that specialized in expensive skis. Seems to me maybe there is something like that available at Fry's that you could put in your seatpost and pick up the signal on a smartphone. Campus police should be interested in busting the guys. Might be too pricey though, but just a thought.
