Today, I just purchased a brass bell for my bike. This bell is kinda unusual in that it sounds like a Buddhist bell that rings just before meditation. It is indeed a very resounding and sobering bell. If the bell rings in the morning next to your bed, you're guranteed to jump up already fully awake and ready to go.

I usually hate it when other riders whiz past me without letting me know that they are about to pass. I am sometimes guilty of the same infraction when not thinking or being very considerate of other cyclists. I always consider it to be in good form and civil, to let the rider ahead of me know that I'm about to pass. Warning riders ahead is both a display of good manners and respect.

I now possess the tool for doing just that!

Is this what you have, a brass bell by crane? I've one and like it as well.

...And I hate it when people don't look when they change lanes or turn, and don't signal turns. In all seriousness, I've had people move left when I've yelled "on your left!" I've also had distracted people who had a very clear line of sight jump immediately in front of me. So while yelling, belling, or whatever worsened the former situation, it would have helped in the latter.

Ultimately unsafe riders (and peds, and vehicles) will be unsafe, bell or not. If I'm going to go out with anything other than my voice, I'll take an Airzound.

I only live 2 miles from Missouri's Katy Trail so I ride there a lot. I've got little "ting ting" Incredi bells on my bikes and I find they'er about 50% effective. We used to also have a much bigger "ice cream" bell on our tandem that my wife used, but the mounting broke. I'm looking for a suitable replacement. I'm thinking that brass Crane bell might be just the ticket.

Ahh Man!

I just saw the You Tube video on Airzound. The physics of this horn is based upon air pressure (80 psi) and it practically blows you away!

The only potential problem that I can see with Airzound, is that it can possibly cause adjacent vehicles to crash from having their driver's nerves frazzled! It's too LOUD!

Arizound is not meant to be used on other cyclists or peds. It is loud, and I actually heard one today... yeeeaaaaaa, going to get one myself too.
The bell you got isn't a waste, use it on targets like other cyclists or peds!

There are a few peds I would definitely consider using it on...

If you're a responsible ped though, you have nothing to fear. :)

It's a good bell, and draws more smiles than hostility. Still, it isn't very loud.

What I'd really like is one of the bells they used to use at reception desks. The harder you hit it, the louder it is.

Well, I rang it in a LBS and all of the customers turned around in utter disgust and shock. I was about twenty yards away at the time. I rang it again at an intersection while stopped at a light and all the stopped drivers (including one playing loud music), looked at me with expressions of annoyance.

I use a horn instead. It makes louder sounds than the bell. It may draw hostility, but I think it's better. :D

I like the friendly nature of the bell. Very diplomatic.

You are clearly not using the bell pictured above.

Ring this bell 5 times in succession and see the results around others! ;)

This is my horn. I don't keep it permanently attached to the bike. I attach it only when I ride, since one of the holes of the plastic bracket broke open when I tried to secure it to the handlebars with the screw.

Well, yeah. Five times in succession in a bike shop might be kind of disgusting.
