General Cycling Discussion - What percentage of people ride bikes in your town?

In the area of Portland OR where I live -- southwest, around 5 percent ride! I'd say in Southeast and Northeast the percentage is higher. Probably more like 10 percent, the same percentage of male nurses in the nursing field:eek:

Don't you just hate it when you take a ride and hardly see anyone else riding on your ride? Especially if it's a sunny day with air conditioning!

That's what it feels like around here.

According to this page, 1% commutes by bicycle. We're such a small town, that 1% is probably just my husband, lol! (okay so I might be just exaggerating just a little bit here but that's what it seems like. :) )

It's funny how we as cyclists beg for more cyclists on the street in areas of lack and how when we see that vision accomplished we complain of other issues, traffic and no place to park the bike!!!

Around here (metro Atlanta) about 0.00001%. Some days it seems like it's less than that. :rolleyes:

Here in Esteli, Nicaragua, I'd say it's about 50% to 75%

If you head down into Denver or any of the cities on the front range near the mountains the number is much higher than my suburb. They are still desperately holding onto their vehicles here. I have been seeing a few additional riders but once winter hits it will just be me and a couple other riders.

As always it's 'out of necessity' that people ride bikes. Be careful what you wish for...

Under 1 percent. We get a few who commute to the chicken plant by bicycle and I ride all the time, as does a few others, but it's way under 1 percent here.

I don't know how many people in Zaandam have ridden a bicycle but it would be close to 100%. ~50% of all travel on distances up to 7,5 km (~5 miles) are made by bike.

It seems there are quite a few bicyclist in my little town. A year or so ago I was out for a ride in the country, several miles out of town in the country I caught up with some old guy (Im 50 he is about 70) on a hybird. He was movin out, I was thinking I was glad he wasnt on a road bike or he would drop me. As I came up beside him I said Hi. He looked up and it was our Mayor. He has been pretty good about bike lanes and is trying to get them tied into Indy's lanes. I am getting pretty happy with the effort, we are in kinda a backward little town.

It seems there are quite a few bicyclist in my little town. Our Mayor in Portland (Sam Adams) is a bicycle rider and advocate. Not too long ago he hit a cyclist doing some creative cycling. He stopped made sure she was OK. He is on our side, always wanting more lanes or more improvements. I love our Mayor!!!

0.7% in neighboring Atlanta. That's the percentage of commutes which are by bicycle. 0.6% of all trips.

Iono any percentage, but just to give you an idea, here is a link to a map of all the trails in my area. We probably have close to 100 miles of really nice trails. I hate illinios, but love the trails right here where I live.

I ride a bike because I choose to ride a bike. Have a nice car, gets dusty. I'm happier--that's what matters!

Louisville is at 0.4% according to Bikeleague.org. If Anchorage AK can break 1%, we should be able to here too with our milder winters.

I was going to say very few----BUT how are you going to grade the rider as a rider.

14 houses in my road 9 kids of school age in 5 houses. All have bikes and all ride them to get to school- visit mates- or go down the town. 3 of those houses have the adults with bikes so that is a further 6 Only two ride them frequently though and that is on Fine weekends when they will go for a 10 mile (Max) ride

BUT I ride a bike for Fun and so do two of my neighbours that I got started on road bikes. Every weekend and we are out for a 40 miler for a coffee- or a 30 miler up hills- for coffee- or an organised ride that may be as long as a Metric Century--with coffee again.

So in my road a lot of bikes and some are ridden seriously.

But in general- I would say less that 2% over here ride bikes on enough occasions to say they actually ride their bikes.

Small rural town of 3500 pop. in an all rural farming county with more people on bikes every year!!

I live in L.A......I can't think that small.

Stats here put ridership at 1-2% through the riding season... when winter hits it sometimes seems that it is just me and a small group of hard core cyclists but that number has been growing every year as more people realize that, despite the harsh climate, one can cycle year round here.

That means there are about 15,000 regular commuters and would not include kids and those who ride recreationally which adds greatly to that number... cycling is an extremely popular activity here and the numbers continue to increase.

Higher fuel prices have inspired or forced people to look at alternative means and some have taken to riding during periods of high prices and just kept riding as they found it to be really enjoyable and economical.

Figure that on my commute today that there will be some bike congestion on the bridge although it is nothing like crossing the Hawthorne bridge during rush hour.

Summer the Ride Down the West Coast touring cyclists swell the statistics,
but the Harley and RV people also add to the numbers overall..

The city is usually 2 years behind on publishing stuff but I think it is about 10 percent of people that 'commute' or whatever. Not sure how they got it, or if it is even remotely accurate. Some agency is also trying to push for 20 percent by 2020. Don't think it'll meet the milestone.

I tried finding out the percentage of bicyclists here in Portland, ME but was unable to find out the vital statistics. However, I do see a great many cyclists out and about and some of them do this in the coldest of temperatures in the winter.

For as much as it costs to live in San Francisco I'm surprised that more people aren't forced to commute to work on their bikes. :p

Hate it?? No, I enjoy my solitude. I'm afraid, however, that the crowds are moving this way -- I've already encountered 6 other riders this year. I think that's more than I've seen in the past 5 years combined.

I live 10 miles from a town of 1,000, so I don't consider myself a town resident. I know of only one adult in town who rides a bike, so I guess that's 1/1000 = 0.1%.

More people ride horses here than bicycles.
