I have been working on a 1970 Raleigh Sports "all gold" edition for about a month. I put it back together this past weekend and noticed that the gears were not shifting quite as smooth as I wanted them to, so I attempted to replace the cable in the Sturmey Archer grip shifter. Well, when I unscrewed the two screws holding it together, the thing popped open and apparently there was a tiny "diameter ball" and a spring that popped out when it opened. I looked everywhere for them on the floor and can't find them. Now I have this awesome bike that has 2 unusable gears, all because I had to try to get it perfect. If anyone knows where I can get one of these, I would greatly appreciate it and thanks for taking the time to read this. (and to top it all off, the cable was not a standard brake cable, so that didn't even get accomplished)
Such things are on ebay all the time.

Do you mean one of these?
Used ones which will have more of a vintage look can be found on eBay, or from some LBSes that handle old stuff (in Chicago I'd try Uptown Bikes first), doubtless some parts boxes belonging to members here.

I'd opt for a standard "thumb" trigger shifter, they're easier to find, and they work better IMHO.

I need one of the ones in 20grit's post. I got a good deal on the bike, put a lot of work into it and it makes me sick that I may have to pay nearly twice what I paid for the bike, to replace the shifter, just because a ball the size of a BB and a spring flew out when I was checking out the shifter. I will probably just buy one of the shifters, like the one in Chicago Al's post before I will pay $90 to keep it original. I don't plan on selling it. Just sucks.
