I found this posted on another forum and knew it would be of interest here.

QBP (http://www.qbp.com/) is the biggest bike parts distributor in the US. They have many of their own brands including Surly and Civia bikes.

The following is copy-and-pasted from a press release on their site, dated August 29 (http://www.qbp.com/pdf/QBP_8.29.11.pdf):

New Brand 45North Offers Unparalleled Cold Weather Performance

QBP announced the creation of 45North, a brand delivering unparalleled performance in cold-weather conditions. The initial product mix will feature a line of tires developed for use on snow and ice, including one 26-inch and one 700c studded model, and the Husker Dü, a proprietary fat tire for all-terrain bikes. Prototypes will be available for viewing at Interbike. The studded tires will be in stock at QBP and available to bike retailers in October, with the Husker Dü following in November.

According to David Gabrys, brand manager: “Our team lives, works and rides in the winter-biking capital of North America, with five months of winter conditions. We have more people riding more miles in more cold than anyone else. We know what it takes to stay warm and dry and comfortable in the cold, and that expertise will be reflected in our products.”

After rolling out winter tires in 2011, 45North will begin developing other product categories. A winter cycling boot designed in partnership with leading insulation manufacturers is on the slate for the 2013 riding season.

“45North will specialize in products tailored to the winter cycling experience. Our products are bicycle-specific; we design products from the ground up to meet the specific demands of winter cycling,” Gabrys said.

Target markets for 45North include the Northeast, upper Midwest, Rocky Mountains, Pacific Northwest and Alaska. “Generally, any region that gets a snow-freeze-thaw pattern in the winter will find a ready audience for our products,” Gabrys said.

I can't wait for that Husker Du tire, its tread looks perfect for the loose snow. Coupled with the Big Fat Larry 26x4.7 on the front of my Pugsley, I think this winter is going to be a lot more fun.

I hear they're going to have boots available in 2012 or 2013. I find this to be very good news because frankly current cycling boots by Lake and others aren't really meant for the cold temps we get here. I expect that boots developed by folks in Minneapolis will actually be usable on a fine 20 below January day ;)

Interested to see what they're studded tires offerings will be too. There's been some rumors that they're working with Innova which would be bad news since their tires don't hold up.

Um. Q is in Bloomington, almost 20 miles south of North Minneapolis. They're a bunch of lightweights down there. Really, it's more a suburb of Iowa.

From what I've seen I'm not impressed. More Chicom crap that probably won't work as well as the Scandinavian XC ski gear I've taken to using the past couple years.

Soma isn't QBP.

I'm still disappointed they still don't make a lightly studded Pugsley tire for commuting...this last winter in Minneapolis was brutal, seems weird to me that they're making yet another set of studded tires that Nokian and Schwalbe already cover, but don't make a studded tire for their own winter bike.

Just when you think you have everything you need, they come up with fat studded tires. Can't wait to see the offerings.

Um...fyi, I don't think they've actually come up with any fat studded tires. They're just going to sell skinny studded tires so far.

I thought they were talking about the Husker Du 26x3.8 as a studded tire. Oh, well. Someone will eventually figure out there is demand for a fat studded tire.

I'm interested to see what their tires would look like as well, but it's good news to see more interest in winter cycling
