Has anyone tried a Rholoff or Shimano Nexas internally geared (8, 9, 11, or 14-speed) hubs for CX? Is it even alloed under UCI?

Just wondered as they seem to have a wider gearing that standard 1x9 or 1x10 setups.

never seen it done ... I doubt UCI would care unless your racing elite in which case you likely would not do this anyway. My 2 cents : seems like trouble and potentially abusive use of the part, better sorted for a commuter or touring rig IMO ... CX beats the crap out of equip

I was thinking that it is less likely to get clogged by mud, and less likely to drop a chain in exchange for bolt on rear end. I am not sure about the weight differerence. 135mm bolt on hub may not be thegreatest unless you have a spare bike in the pit vs just spare wheels.

A long as you don't have shoulder the bike, run-ups that are too long and too often..
www.Rohloff.de

They are The hub for endurance MTB races, and the weight penalty is small
when you consider all the parts they replace..

I have 2, one is disc braked.. go for that too..

I guess wheel swaps would be a potential issue, but whatever.

Also, there'd be a certain weight penalty, but it's easy enough to calculate how much and whether that bothers you or not. Personally I don't see it as a deal-breaker.

Those things are HEAVY. I could not imagine racing on that. 1x10 can offer more than enough gear for cross any ways i run it myself.

other than the pricy open skeleton cassettes , sram highlighted at the high end
to have exits of muck thru the cassette.

Seems not much room to pack mud in a tightly stacked, 10 speed cassette,
before its skating over the teeth.

Maybe the single speed classes would be the ones to go for instead , K.I.S,S !

still would have fun, just run more..

Looks like about a 250g penelty when comparing an Alfine 11S to an Ultegra 10-speed w/brifters, plus much more of a gear range (400+% for the Alfine vs about 250% for a single-ring external set-up). No time to put it into service this season, but definately looks like a winter project.
