General Cycling Discussion - What do you guys use for security while leaving your bike?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just use a simple cable one with a lock. What kind of lock do you secure your bike with?

I use the OnGuard Beast an extra large chain and a Master Key Lock when securing my Grand Prix.

For my old Nishiki and my old Giant, I just use the Beast.

Homemade chain lock: 5/8" grade 70 transport chain in an old innertube and a Master #40 lock.

Krypto Evo chain if the bike is going to be locked up long or in a sketchy area. Cable lock for short/safe places.

This question is so entirely novel to this forum I don't know how to approach it. If you search the history I bet you can't find a single thread where someone asked this same question.

Sarcasm aside - do a search!

My favorite question from every issue of Bicycling magazine:"How do I get faster in 45 minutes after work when I'm tired, have to take my son to little league, don't like my wife, and both my daughters are knocked-up"?

To answer the OP: tie a single zip-tie around the top tube and around one link of the chain-link fence.

Pitbull. Not the OnGuard lock, mind you, an actual pit bull terrier, usually leashed to the top tube. Also doubles as a power assist, with the help of a fishing pole and a dog bone. Can't park anywhere that there might be squirrels, though.

It all depends on where, when, and for how long I'm leaving the bike.

On a Sunday morning at a rural gas station while I use the restroom and buy a Gatorade, I don't lock it at all.

All day on the rack outside the downtown public library? Well, that bike has a full set of Pitlocks, and I use both a Kryptonite NY Standard U-lock on the back, and a Kryptonite Hardwire 2085 on the front. And that's after I strip accessories.

Simple cable and lock here also but I'm in a rural town. If I still lived in Baltimore, I would bring out the heavy artillery.

Hey there TSL!

What gas station do you go to on Sunday mornings?

Just curious... :D

Well, the club ride I'm planning on tomorrow morning stops in Holcomb, NY... ;)

Cable lock, with a four-number combo. But I recently read that bike locks are apparently for morons. :/

Now that's FUNNY....:) I wanted to comment on one unique post in this thread, but paused, thought, and enjoyed humor rather than challenging intolerance. Best choice of day...:) THANKS..

On Guard U-lock and 1/2"-thick coated cable; I carry it because it's 9' long, and I need to lock up the kids' bikes when they go anywhere with me.

I'm looking at a better U-lock, as well as a monster cable that's actually an auto trailer lock. No problems with what I have, I just like the extra security....

Depends where I am. I have a bike locker at work and don't bother bringing a lock. Otherwise I have a Kryptonite NY U-lock. Wheels have security skewers on them. Most of the time I'm not too concerned about my lights aside from my Niterider.
