Hi everyone,

I'm taking a trip out to Portland this week (Sunday through Friday), and would like to do some mountain biking while I'm out there. I'll be flying into PDX and getting around using the MAX and bus system. Would it be feasible to rent a bike somewhere and get to a nearby park with some decent mountain bike trails? If so, what would you recommend?

I've read a lot about Portland and am looking forward to my visit! :)

Not really any good MTB fun accessible by public transit in this town, unfortunately.

Forest park has a good long worn out road (Leif Erickson) with a couple of teaser fire roads coming off it. There are some good single track trails there but the good stuff there is all illegal.

You can do a couple laps around Powell Butte. But it's kinda boring, IMO.

If you're into dirt jumping there are jumps to hit by Rocky Butte.

Probably the most feasible "fun" single track action via transit is to be had in Scappoose. Take the CC Rider (Columbia County Rider) out to Scappoose. Get on your bike and backtrack south on HWY 30 a couple miles, take a right on Rocky Point Road (it's kinda a Right then Left off the hwy.) Then ride 1.1 miles up to the first blue gate on the right. Nice trails out there. Make sure you don't miss the last CC Rider back to the big city.

Oh, and if you don't mind mega road miles before hitting trails we have Tarbell trail over here. It's about 13 miles from the bus stop in Battle Ground to the singletrack, though.

Lemme know if you want direction to that.

If you have access to a car (or a buddy w/car :) ), try some of the trails near Hood River. Just came back from there and it was spectacular! Although right now the fires that are coming off of central OR and near Mt. Hood are over the skies, the trails and views are great.

+1 awesome trails. There's a great trial system near FS Rd 44, but I'm sure it's too smokey up there with the fire so close by.
