I recently bought my first tandem. I have a set of road Race X Lite wheels, I don't believe the rear wheel will fit but could I use the front to replace, the wheel that is on there, or would the weight of 2 riders be too much for it. The last thing I want is a front wheel failure!

is this from the "paired spoke years?" if so, ive seen a lot of these develop cracks in the rim. i wouldnt put them on my single.

yea the paired spoke ones are prone to cracking. i always check for cracks before doing any work on them

The paired-spoke Bontrager wheels aren't strong enough for safe use on a tandem, and wouldn't accomodate disc brakes if/when you went that route. My suggestion, if you can afford it, is Velocity Dyad rims and DT Swiss 540 tandem hubs, with DT or Wheelsmith spokes, handbuilt by a reputable builder who can do a follow-up check on them after you get them broken in.

Actually yes. They are still good. They are well liked around here. Are regular road wheels up to the weight stresses a tandem will put on them. Also I have a carbon fork from a Scott cr1 I could put on it. Again my main concern is whether the parts will be up to the task of a tandem.

Use parts designed for tandem duty. Regarding wheelsets, there's more than just additional weight stress going on there. If you really want paired-spoke tandem wheels, Shimano does (or did) have some.

I'll start looking. I do like the way they look. And they are light. The problem may be finding tandem specific ones.
