It was a media car but not cameras per se - cameras are on bikes. Point being whipping around in a car might look cool sometimes, but other times it is a white-knuckle experience. How about the near miss in one of the US races earlier this year where a rider fell right next to the rear left tire of a sponsors car.
Only jobs that are glorious in cycling are taken by Phil, Paul and Bobke.

The guy driving the car is usually the director sportiff of the team. Think Johan Bruyneel or Bjarne Rijss. Ride 5-6 TDF's and you might get the job.

I was driving one of the Mavic support cars back in the late 80's and yes it was a fun job. Being roving tech support, there was always something to do and when there were crashes, everyone was out the car helping and then driving like hell to catch back up to the main group or the break was very fun.
One race in Central Cal there was a huge crash and we were there handing out bike, wheels, etc for 5 minutes. When we all finally jumped back in the van, the mechanic Mitch Clinton kept telling me to drive faster and the race official was telling me to slow down. It was quite funny at the time.
