Hello,
I bought a used Campagnolo Pista wheelset but noticed that the rear axle doesn't protrude to the end of the nuts. In other words, the nuts are binding on the axle by only a few threads. I don't feel confident in tightening them.
The length of the axle is 15.5 cm, and the length on my other wheel is 16.5 - which seems to be perfect.
What's up here? Is 15.5 standard or had it been changed. Where can I get a 16.5?

You're using them in a track frame with 120mm rear axle spacing?

Chances are that the wheel is old from the days of steel dropouts. Now I assume that you have an aluminum or carbon bike with thicker dropouts...maybe 2-3x as thick.

There's not much you can do about it. Maybe see if you can get a modern axle for the wheel.

Yes, the dropouts are a little thick all right, but I would expect that a modern hub like the Pista woudl have provision for that.
Does anyone have a back Pista hub to see if it has 15.5 axle width, or was mine changed. I can't find anything on axle lenght on-length.

It's the same trouble you'll have with any NJS hub in a modern non-steel frame. If you've got three or four threads engaged I wouldn't worry about it.

try using a standard 10mmX26 tpi nut(non track nut)and a thin 1mm brass washer

Yes, I got two 'ordinary' nuts in the meantime with thin, stainless washers. It is a metric fine thread. It is not as nice as the track nuts and they are not 15mm, but at least I can use the wheel now as they screw in much further. I just wouldn't have confidence to tighten the nuts properly with only a few threads engaged.
I'd still like to get a 16.5 axle and use the proper track nuts though.

It is not as nice as the track nuts.

there are a lot nicer fasteners.
