Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Warmer Bike Clothes for Tall Heavy Clyde

Need to get some warmer clothes to ride in for a trip planed later this month. I do plan to get warm and leg warmers but might need something else. Would like to find a big enough waterproof/wind proof jacket. But I have a hard time finding things since I am tall (6 foot 4) and heavy (334 pounds).

Any suggestions?

3XL for $19.20 - 100 % merino wool. They'll probably have a jacket in your size, too, but here's a great base layer.

Since you're thinking about getting arm and leg warmers, you might actually save money by ordering two of the shirts, and making warmers out of the second one. Cut the sleeves off and you have one set of warmers, then cut the body up and sew it back together for another set.

merino is an itch-less wood like cashmere. It's full of the awesome... BUT.. be warned, cheap Chinese merino is not always merino. It can be a blend of normal wools and polyesters branded as merino.

I love my merino from Castelli, but it comes out of China. I got two peices from On-One and Planet-X and it came from China too. Road Holland is supposed to be Made in America now, but doesn't come in our sizes. :(

Cashmere is wool from goats. When most people say "wool" they mean from sheep. You can get it from all sorts of animals ... I have a Himalayan yak wool sweater, which is incredibly soft, a lot like cashmere.

Fun fact: the softer natural wool is, the warmer it's likely to be. Those are really two sides of the same coin. Warmth comes from the fibers being extremely small, so they trap pockets of dead air, which get warmed by your body. Softness comes from the fibers being so small they don't bother your skin.

Merino is the softest sheep wool around, but it comes in different grades: coarse, fine, ultra-fine, etc. This is basically a measure of how thick each fiber ( think of them as follicles, but they aren't really hair ) is. Any wool that's 17.5 microns or smaller is going to be so fine it won't be able to bother your skin. 19 microns is very soft, but feels more like linen. If a piece of clothing you're interested in is 100 % merino, then the most important thing is the fiber size in microns. ( Merino is just a kind of sheep, bread for the softness of its wool. )

Also not my size, lol. I'm looking for L or XL; I browsed through the site, and didn't find anything in a quality and price point that I would be willing to buy. I've bookmarked it, though.

YES! But, what size are you? I'm 5'9 and 336, and I wear a men's 2x or so, so I just want to make sure I'm looking at the right sizes for you. I bought padded bike shorts from Aerotech Designs and I am impressed by the quality of the work. http://www.aerotechdesigns.com/cycling-jackets.htm There is a link to their jackets. They definitely will have your size.

Make sure you get a waterproof helmet cover! Thought I'd add that if you don't have one.

Also, what is your pricepoint? Aerocycle Designs has 2 nice waterproof/windproof jackets that run 99 dollars and go up to a 4x. My Columbia raingear was on extreme clearance (i think 50 for the jacket and bottom. Campmor just has great deals that way.)

Hit the Goodwill, or other charity thrift stores. They always have stuff in L-XXL, and you cannot beat the price. I got an XL sports/workout jacket the other day for $3.50. I layer these over poly-pro shirts. When its really cold, I'll add a sweater.

But then I don't give a rats ass if my stuff is "cyling specific."
