Bicycle Mechanics - Mystery or mental block?

My FD worked fine with my old friction shifter on the DT.
But now, trying to connect the Ultegra handle I notice that I can't pull the cage against the spring, since the cable comes up from below.
I realize the derailer is a "top pull", but how on earth did it do that without a problem before?
The cable ran in the same guides as it does now!
I can't see any way to have it pull from above.

That front derailleur is a top-swing, DUAL-pull FD, which means it can handle a cable coming from above or below. In one of the orientations, the cable needs to wrap around the guide first (the black part with the cable groove). I suspect the guide is necessary when the cable comes from the bottom.

I suspect you'll nave problems using the Ultegra (road) shifter with that Tourney (MTB/flat-bar) FD, which do not operate ont he same cable-pull ratio. While it's not an issue with friction, this is an issue for indexed shifting.

I think the old man needs to just get a book, respectfully. And what is the world is a "Ultegra handle"?? An ultegra brifter?? If the answer to the last one is yes, then it makes sense that U could need a longer cable to start with. Those FD are compatible with ultegra brifters? ??

Also, are you double-clicking the "Submit" button when you make threads?Can you believe it, your clear advice and my bulldog tenacity overcame the 98º sauna of my garage, poor eye sight, and sore back, and the old Univega is actually roadworthy again! While there was no outright percussion mechanics activity going on, I did have to apply a bit of good old "Afro engineering "... the cable was not long enough by now to wrap around that guide, so I had to revert to the old cable that was still hanging from the friction lever. That one naturally was only long enough to make it from the braze on position of the old levers, which meant I had to install a Suntour/friction front shifter and Ultegra/6600 rear shifter combo! Had to remove the right Suntour lever of course to let the cable from the right brifter go by unobstructed.
Anyway, don't let anyone tell you that I am not creative!

I did have two new cables for the brifters - one went into the RD, the other into the FD, and both were swiftly clipped to what I thought was the right length and nippled off. But then I got the news about the re-routing of the FD cable, and it didn't qualify any longer. :)
Luckily I still had the old cables from the DT shifters, and the rear one was plenty long to serve as left Suntour DT friction shifter cable now.
All I really wanted to do was get something running for now, and test the right brifter through my nine gears.
This will do for the time being.

If the cables where in a down tube shifters system and then you are trying to use brifters you will need more cable. Pretty much thats what I understand of what u are claiming. I would ride w/o the fd, it wont make any difference unless u are a smasher 53x11 guy.
