Hey guys, got another question for you.....

I used to ride xc with a little bit of street riding, but in the last month or 2 ive really got into the whole freeride aspect, especially the jumps and drops...

But, my question to you is, What bike would you buy for under £1000 tat is capable of doing all of these?
Although it will mostly be for Jumping as ive really taken a shine to it and cant get enough :D

On my british forum they suggest the Identiti Dr jekyll, this is an excellent bike, but im not sure if it will suit my needs, it says its a BSX bike.... what do you guys think?

Anyway, what would you buy, im having a real hard job finding a bike that will suit my needs.

If you need measurements and stuff like that, im 5 foot 9 inches tall, and 175lbs.... I would really like a hardtail, for two reasons, one, i will get a dedent hardtail for this money rather than a crap fs rig, and Ht's just rule :P

I'm not an expert but I believe if you find a bike that is capable of doing everything it won't be excellent in anything. I'd lean more towards a big suspension bike like a Specialized Demo 8 for instance, and just deal with the weight and suspension on the street. I think that's better than getting a more street/xc oriented bike and sacrificiing suspension travel when doing more involved trail and dh stuff.

I dont want a cross country bike.... Just a hardtial with maybe 130mm travel? i wont be douing anything insane on it....... yet, i just need something that is more aimed at jumping and drops, but can still be used for trails and northshore and stuff like that

If a hardtail dj is what your looking for look at the sepcialized p3 or transition trail or park. A lot of brands make hardtail dj bikes. Go to your lbs and ask to see them.

I agree with both Vandal and Crgowo. You can ride a dj style bike on trails, just a little hard, and requires some more walking :)...but it won't be ideal for everything (except maybe djing :D)

Ok, i discussed this will maelstrom awhile ago about the trail or park, when i was looking at building a bike, the thing is, i dont feel up to building a complete bike just yet, and i cant find anywhere in the UK that does the fully built bike

Sorry. I have no idea. Why not send them and email and ask?

Ok, ive sent them an Email, just waiting for a response, thx

Maelstrom

They do

http://www.transitionbikes.com/InternationalDistributors.cfm

Also if you look at pricing, look lower, they have build kits you can buy, and they can likely press in all the parts you need then you just have to build it from mid way (put fork on, wheels and crank arms type of thing.

What about the p3? Dill Tremblay rides one for dirt jumping and street a\nd it works fine, what does everyone think of one of these?

ive ridin one, strong and gnarly the 05 is sick. it can stand up to a beating just check out darren barrelcloth in ride the lightning, he doles out some abuse on it.

The P. bikes are great bikes. Have you looked into any Kona bikes, thay build some strong stuff.

11-26-04, 03:25 PM
What would you recommend? P1, p2 or p3 with a build? ( i dont really want this option, i would rather buy the bike already built.

i was also looking at the Cro mo version, i love steel frames, i would buy the P1, but it has no front brake, i suppose i could always buy one later on..Is there any difference between the P1 Alu frame and the P2 or P3? Or is it just the componenets on them?

I love how you keep referencing pros riding on bikes to prove how tough they are haha

Regardless, the p's are a tough series. If they are finally offering a steel one that will finally make them loveable by all (steel is real)

the frames are the same geometery, but the quality of the metal, and the build are different.

it sucks that the p1 is the only steel one though, i think they should make the p3 in steel, but i guess that a steel frame with all of the heavy duty parts, would weigh alot.

Cornish_Rdr_UK
11-26-04, 04:55 PM
i dont under stand that either to be honest, but i like the Cromoly steel p1, it just looks real nice, ive looked at Kona, but the specialized P series looks the best for me atm....

Probably gonna get a Steel p1, but im not sure yet, the componenets are pretty rubbish, but the p2 isnt much better and thats only available in an alu frame...

Maelstrom
11-26-04, 04:57 PM
A good dj/urban frame, steel or alum, will likely weight in at 35 to 40 pounds either way. If you are looking for that strong a frame anyways. :) I think it is a good call. Now that I have ridden steel for a dj/urban frame, I will never go back to an alum frame for jumps and stuff.

DjRider04
11-26-04, 04:59 PM
Id get the Dr.Jekyl.....I was going to buy that infact. Heard really good things about it, and some sick rider in CR5 rides one.....dont know his name though. The Dr.Jekyl could do everything....the steel p1 might be a bit of a pain.....

Cornish_Rdr_UK
11-26-04, 05:10 PM
Why do you say that DJ Rider?

arboc!
11-26-04, 05:11 PM
the new gary fisher hardtail, the bigg'n is pretty beefy, i wouldnt buy the complete, but the frame is tough as nails. i rode chris duncan's when he and his crew put on a show at silver mt. he had it set up with a marzocchi z150 and it is solid as a rock, definatly a freeride bike with some big drops in it.

Maelstrom
11-26-04, 05:25 PM
Why do you say that DJ Rider?

I assume, p1's are already known to be heavy and pigish for their strength. A steel p1...WOW...that could be nasty...

arboc!
11-26-04, 05:31 PM
actually my p.1 wieghs 30 lbs and is super responsive.

arboc!
11-26-04, 05:33 PM
A steel p1...WOW...that could be nasty...
i dont think the weight will change that much, because the frame of the steel p.1 is skinnier, and round, the A1 p.1 has a fatter bulkier frame.

DjRider04
11-26-04, 05:37 PM
Its because the steel p.1 is STEEL.....and the A1 p.1 is ALUMINUM.....hence the tubing.....the steel is going to weigh more.

Cornish_Rdr_UK
11-26-04, 06:12 PM
Im not really too bothered about the weight, its more of the componenets that im worried about, but the p1 is only £500 which will leave a huge amount to upgrade Brakes rims, stuff like that...

arboc!
11-26-04, 06:13 PM
its better to buy a bike with the parts you want, than to buy then upgrade.

DjRider04
11-26-04, 06:19 PM
Comparing the p1 frame to the IDentity is kinda funny....

arboc!
11-26-04, 06:25 PM
who did that

Cornish_Rdr_UK
11-26-04, 06:58 PM
The reason i compared them is because they are two different styles of frame if you didnt notice, ones for BSX and one for dirt jumping and street, the reason why i questionned the Identiti is because i dont know if this bike would fit my needs....

So Dirt jump, you think i should by a P3 frame and build it up?

Maelstrom
11-26-04, 07:45 PM
Why not buy the p3...break parts and replace as needed with parts you like..gives you a bike cheap now and lets you build it up over time. Some of those crap parts may last a while

arboc!
11-26-04, 07:49 PM
for $1600 us you better not be getting cheap crap parts.

Maelstrom
11-26-04, 07:50 PM
ok but it sounds like they aren't the parts he wants is all I was saying.

arboc!
11-26-04, 07:52 PM
he could always get the p3 frame for 550

Maelstrom
11-26-04, 07:53 PM
It isn't worth it. I would go boutique for that cost.

arboc!
11-26-04, 07:59 PM
yeah

Maelstrom
11-26-04, 08:00 PM
If you are willing to go with a frame for fr thats tough and 500american and less and not considering weight. There are many many many frames that are awesome and cheaper/same price.

243 Racing
Transition ToP
Identiti Dr Jekyl
Identiti 666 (almost half the price)
Planet X jack flash
Planet X Ridge Black
Planet X Pitbull
On One gimp ( a little xc geometry)
GSR
Gack Speed demon
Rigid one (more xcish but tough and DAMN cheap)

And if you really wanted to have fun. Add 200$ american to the 500 and you can buy just about every boutique HT frame on the market including Evil...Just doesn't seem worth it for JUST a specialized.

Oh and thats one sites pricing, a little shopping and I bet some of those euro brands you could get even cheaper.

Cornish_Rdr_UK
11-27-04, 02:58 AM
Well, ive looked at a lot of those frames, i like your idea of buying a P series bike and breaking it then replacing in the parts.... The parts on the bike arent what i want, and i will no doubt upgrade over time, so this seems like a pretty good option, i just need to think about it really, im gonna ask my dad if he can take me to the specialized dealer so i can test the bikes out.....

As for the boutique frames, i cant really afford it, im stretching it as it is :) thx anyway though

Cornish_Rdr_UK
11-27-04, 03:15 AM
Oh i see what you mean noe Maelstrom, the UK doesnt do a fully built p3, only the frame... so the closest im gonna get to a p series bike that is like the p3 is the p2..

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHhh i dont know!

Maelstrom
11-27-04, 09:45 AM
You have lots of options. My point was pretty much the p series frame just doesn't seem worth it. The bike is good, enjoy ride break...but if you are gonna buy the frame, look at something more unique, 500$ for a mass built alum frame seems like a waste of money :)

check out orange, the ms isle, or the hitman would be a good heavy duty rig.
