Hi all,

Would someone please be kind enough to offer an opinion on changing the handlebars on my 2012 Trek 7.2 FX to butterfly bars? I really need something other than flat bars and I don't think drops are an option, but correct me if changing to drops, can, in fact, be done. I am mostly curious if a different stem is desired/required when changing the flats to butterfly bars?

Also, the LBS does not stock butterfly bars (if you know of anyone who does near Erie, PA please let me know). Since I apparently must order online, does anyone know of a source that actually lists the dimensions of the bars?

You just need bar tape, the bars themselves, and a longer stem. Buy all but the bars at the LBS, and order the bars online.

http://www.veloorange.com Velo Orange carries the "Butterfly or Trekking bars", my LBS had one set in "black" and it's like pulling teeth to get a 2nd. set for ME on our tandem. Got the "strokers" bars, switched to "butterfly" bars and the wife really likes it. We put them on the old hybrids we had and both thought they were a lot better for our hands than straight bars, fyi, ymmv.

You need to think pretty clearly as to how your cockpit is going to be set up, where you shifters and brakes are to be position in relation to your hands cruising position. Also, most trekking bars are hardly lightweight...be warned. Depending on where the bars rest in relation to your reach, you may decide you stem length needs changing. Also, some bars come in different widths, and different diameters..(like 25.4mm).

I other words, it is not a no-brainer.
