BMX - BMX Cruiser for my son?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. My son recently outgrew his 20" bike and I was wondering if a 24" BMX bike would be a good choice for him. We live in a totally flat area and he will want to ride around neighborhoods, through yards, etc. I have a SS townie bike and it seems like this might be a kid size equivalent, and not as heavy as the other bikes I am considering, like the Trek MT 200. Any help you can give me is appreciated - I am pretty much ignorant about BMX bikes.
Thanks!

So, he's just using it to cruise around, and he's not into riding BMX?

Yes, just for riding around. He will want to be able to sit on the seat, etc.

How old/tall is he? If he is just going to use it for cruising and commuting, maybe something more suited to that sort of thing?

Typically when kids outgrow Bmx bikes and want to rided around etc... and not just dirt riding. They will move to a mountain bike. Like the Trek you posted. How old is he and how tall? My boy is 12 and I gave him my MTB and he loves it. Regular 26" Rims. Adult size but he just lowers the seat height. He stills rides his bmx but for just playing around a bit. Big difference being on a mtb.

Hi is 9 and a little under 5 feet tall. He has a single speed Trek kids bike with 20 inch rims, kind of a fake BMX bike with a coaster brake. I guess I thought the 24 would be like a bigger version of the same bike.

Tall kid. If he wants the BMX style cruiser still, then skip 24" and go for a 26". He'll grow into that fast

If you kid just going to use it for cruising and commuting then why he want to go for BMX again. Just take a look at hardtail kids bikes. there are many well sorted branded bikes available specially made for kids. Just give a shot!
