Fifty Plus (50+) - Watched award for a local Sprint Triathlon today . . . Hmm!!

The rec center 1 mile from me was presenting awards as I was leaving from my after-church swimming session.

There were categories of every 5 years or so, including

65-69
70-74
75+

And there were winners in every group, EXCEPT no one entered in the 70-74 group. This means I could have won an award for the 3.3 mile (5K) run + 13 mile bicycle and 500 yard swim.

Now, the Doc has said "no running" - for my back, but, heck, I can sure walk the 5K, and I swim the 500 yards and ride the 13 miles (and more) almost daily.

Times varied from just over 1 hour to almost 2 hours.

Hmmm!!

Food for thought next year. Maybe. Even sort of maybe . . . :)

Can you do that fast walking thing? I don't know what the official name is for it, but my sister does it and enters marathons. So, why not triathlons?

Or, is that out also?

My daughter has a wall full of ribbons from horse shows. The same thing happens in horse shows.

It's called racewalking and it's legal in triathlons (I am also a racewalker).

These are pretty casual - "everyone can and does enter" recreation center events. I have seen lots of folks walking the 5K. I wouldn't be alone.

I would think swimming like that would make a lot of bumping other swimmers.

Exactly, especially if you swim like I do. I didn't really start until 3 years ago, at age 68, and I don't have all that swim team and other experience of others.

Wait a minute. You'll share the lane on the road but not in the pool?

My wife has been doing them for a few years. I go to them as her\pit crew-mechanic\driver\cheering section\photographer. This year I was chatting with a very nice man, at least 50+, closer to 60. He was there to watch\cheer his mother, that was 78 years old!

I'd enjoy it for the 5 minutes it took before my knees swelled up trying to run. No wait... I wouldn't get that far because I'd drown first!

Actually, I'm really comfortable in the water (done lots of scuba diving); I just don't swim that fast.

I see a gent at the local sprint tri's near me in the 70+ age group. Always wins his division. I wouldn't call his run a running or fast walking for that matter. Be he always has a big smile! Give it a go!
