This link points to a nice column in the Sunday N.Y. Times praising transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan, who has been a very forceful advocate of bicycling and who has sometimes taken a lot of political heat for it.

One thing that consistently comes out of these sorts of discussions is the constant cry that cycling facilities don't encourage cycling.

Then I see graphs like this... I have to wonder.

Correlation doesn't imply causation, but it does waggle its eyebrows suggestively and gesture furtively while mouthing "look over there."

The irony here (for me) being how generally un-friendly Rutgers/New Brunswick is toward bike infrastructure. All these decently bike-friendly roads become urban quagmires at the town line, and they spent millions re-constructing Rt 18 while completely ignoring the daily bike traffic a couple years back. Hopefully the city takes the good professor's hint!
