Hi folks,
while I'm at home nursing a couple of broken ribs I thought I'd introduce myself. My son got me back into road riding a year ago father's day by buying me a 1989 Panasonic DX-2000 (66cm) in really nice shape for $75. It's a size tall for me but since I'm a long legged 6'4' I thought it could be an okay bike to see if I was interested in riding again. I clear the top bar okay with some clearance. I had ridden some in the 80's before it was popular in my area and dogs were still allowed to roam free but I quit to raise my family. We rode a good bit last season and had been riding a lot more this season which prompted me to upgrade my bike by basically replacing everything on it but the frame. It now has a combination of new Tiagra, 105 level parts and a 91-92 Dura-Ace crank, and Mavic CXP 33 wheels. It is about perfect for me now.
But I mentioned broken ribs earlier so I'll tell that story now. My son (23) and I (54) had been improving so much on our rides that we had set a goal of completing a metric 100 by Labor Day. We were 5 miles into our well planned ride and had left home on under really foggy conditions. I was in a rush to get off a rather busy highway and onto the less traveled side roads on our route and simply took a turn too quickly and hit a ditch at high speed. The bike was unhurt but the Doctor says I have broken ribs from falling hard onto my right arm. Luckily I wasn't hurt too bad, and the bike was undamaged, just muddy. I love that Panasonic.
So, I'll not be riding anytime soon but by no means have I been turned away from road riding. It has helped me lose weight and get in much better shape and I am hooked on cycling for good this time. I'd like to post some before and after (upgrade) pics of my bike but am not sure where to do this. I'm also considering building an Ultegra level bike on a Gunnar "roadie") frame as soon as I save up for it. Nothing like a spare road bike!
