Just the other day, my brother recommended "The Triplets of Belleville", an animated foreign film. It takes place during the the Tour De France. He described a scene where a cyclist gets his thighs ironed...hysterical, according to him.
The Hard Road is excellent. I've heard that The Tour Baby! is too, but I haven't seen it.

you're kiddin' right?.......I scored 'american Flyers' on Ebay after reading you blokes going on about it....absolutely, the worst film I have ever seen!.....the director obviously knew nothing about cycling.....forget this dross!......As others have said, "The Hard road" is an excellent 'fly on the wall' doco about a struggling US pro team...well worth a view. I'm told that 'Pro' is also very good, (by the same guys apparently)....but I haven't seen it yet....currently bidding on ebay...(no I'm not giving you a link so you can bid against me!)

I have a copy of "The Hard Road" and enjoyed it. Palonetti is supposed to have a new one out called "Pro" about the inside stuff at the U.S. Pro championships in Philadelphia.

I have a copy of Pro and watched it last evening...if you are a cycling junkie and want to see a few tidbits on how teams are put together and the like, some guys sitting around talking about racing, things like that, it's interesting. But from a cinematic standpoint, Jamie's still on a learning curve with music fades (music playing in the background over race shots, then it abruptly ends, things like that) and edits...moviewise, it's better than Hard Road where they claim to be at one race but are actually showing another (the film's part where they are at the Twilight Crit, actually shows scenes from Trenton)..at least this time they have it right, but the fade shots and zooms look like what I do on my own video camera.
There are speed shots with a high def camera that are pretty cool.
Don't watch Pro for the moviemaking (CAT IV)...watch it to learn something about racing (Pro).

--Yes, "Beijing Bicycle" and a Vietnamese film "Cyclo". Actually a cyclo is a three-wheeled pedicab, but the film explores the streets of Ho Chi Minh City where most of the traffic is pedal-powered. Life at 15mph.

Don't forget the Japanese movie "Messengers." It ain't perfect, but it's fun.

The race footage in THR left me pretty unsatisfied.
Heh, I was slamming THR pretty bad on another forum until learning that one of the posters was the Director. To be fair, he agreed with some of the critique but I also learned something... these are documentaries put together by guys like us. Bike riding guys. Could I do better at editing? Yes, but I'm a perfectionist who rarely meets deadlines because I won't let a inferior project out of my hands. That's not a good quality when you have investors and such.
After some reflection, I'll accept weak editing for the benefit of inside poop on the sport and in the meantime if we keep buying these films Jamie will just keep getting better and better. Not many people are making roadie documentaries so lets support the guy unless you want to be watching Hucks and Jumps Xtreme #24 over the winter :)
I own THR and just ordered Pro. Go Jamie!
Try American Flyers.
If nothing else this movie is worth it for the laughable 80's Russian paranoia. That one rider is more stereotypical than the characters in pro wrestling... like the Iron Sheik :)
I got mine out of the bargain bin and it's worth the price.

Do yourself a favour and order "A Sunday in Hell". It's an awesome piece of history. Sideburns everywhere!
There are some great scenes showing Merckx's obsession with bike fit (primarily saddle adjustment)... the guy kept a spanner in his pocket for making adjustments.
The shower scene at the end is so dark and is a perfect wrap-up to the film.
