Hello!
I'm moving to a really awesome-deal of a rental townhouse, but sadly the back patio has no access except from the house, down a spiral staircase. And there's a community association which I think would frown on our bikes (which are cheap, yay) being chained on the sidewalk. So our bikes will be living in the house (maybe taking over the breakfast nook?)... up a half flight of stairs.

The problem is, my bike is heavy! I want to be able to get it in/out without killing myself or having to wait for my boyfriend to help me.

I saw these bike rail/stairs things, and I was thinking about that - does anyone know where I can buy one for not a ton? And does anyone have any better ideas? This is all I could come up with, after I considered pulley systems over the back fence, etc.

We use to climb staircases two and three time taller than that on our mountain bikes just for fun..... (Seriously!!!) :eek: :ride: :eek:


To answer your question though, I do not know where you can get what you have pictured, but any hardware store should have steel, aluminum, and wood that you could use to duplicate it. Otherwise, slide your arm and shoulder under the top tube and grab the downtube with one hand and the handlebar with the other. This is how we "port" cyclocross bike through terrain too rough, or steep to ride and it seems to be the most efficient manner.

You will soon build your self up carry the bike up-stairs, its a technque, learn from the cyclecross riders :)
Been there. Done that and the building manager thought I was nuts.

Since you have clearance overhead, why not just pivot the bike up on its rear wheel and walk up the stairs backwards while holding the handlebar? I do this all the time with my kid's bike that lives in our basement. The rear wheel takes most of the weight. Works better going down stairs, but I've done both ways.
