Well no difference between an alloy one and a steel one if they have the same thread, 68 mm bb shell = english threading.

Are they any better than the plastic one that comes with the BB.Or is it a waste of money?

Ohhh i see. You're talking about a cartridge BB, yes? I believe the part you're referring to is called the lockring.
Over time, the plastic lockrings can degrade and crumble, but this really isn't an issue unless you're removing the BB to put on another bike. In that case, you'd need to buy a new plastic or metal lockring.

In general, cartridge BBs with metal cups cost a tad more, but personally I would pay the few extra bucks just for the extra durability. With that said, the non-drive side cup on a cartridge BB does nothing but fill space and keep the BB itself from flexing too much within the BB shell. So if you honestly want to save a few bucks, I doubt its really an issue, thousands of people use plastic cups with no issues. Good luck!
