So, yesterday I went picking through the basement, the garage and the sheds looking for potenial touring bikes. I actually found four old road bikes in decent condition. But, since I don't know much about what a good bike is, I figured you great folks here would help me.

Would any of these bikes be good for touring if I upgraded them with the right components, or are they just scrap metal?
Thanks,
Charlie

Hi,
Metal stress from age and replacing old parts on the road would be my big concerns. Maybe go down the the bike shop and see what the newer tour bike offer. You are not too far from oneof the best shops in Boston area, the name and town just slips my mind at the moment. We used to stop in on the way to Boston from Jefferson. They have a wide of array of bikes, including recumbents(For touring you cant beat em in my humble opinion.) I'll try to get the shop name for you.
Raliegh used to be a good to be premier touring bikes. Gearing is important unless you have legs like Arnold! I know lots of roadies that tour on their road bike with limited gearing but only a few carried their own gear.
