Hello all :) My name is Matt. I am a 20 year old college student and part time ruby on rails web application developer in Florida.

I am new to the biking scene. I realized that sitting on a computer for multiple hours a day banging out code does not make for the healthiest lifestyle. I needed a hobby that got me active, in High school I played soccer.. but with college and the weird hours I work I needed something that I could decide to do whenever I felt like it. queue biking!

I researched a bit and decided to get a nice used bike instead of just dropping a large amount of cash for a beginner bike. So I found a nice Trek 850 mountain bike with Shimano components on craigslist for $50!

I quickly scooped it up, went to the bike shop and got some road tires to replace the mountain bike ones. I'm pretty sure I also got a deal on the tires. the packaging said $35 right above the bar scan code on each tire.. but both were only $42 when I was rung up. I also got a handlebar mirror, as I plan on riding through the city and a helmet.

In total I spent roughly $140. not bad methinks. Today was my first day riding in ages but I did pretty well, a total of 9 miles! now I can't wait to get out of school and go riding again tomorrow.

Nice choice. I have a Trek 820 that has treated me well, although it doesn't have road bars on it.

Welcome fellow computer nerd :) Same reason I took cycling back up, to counteract my sedentary job (IT Project Manager).

Nice find on the bike :)

hey you're not a geek until you program in High Level Assembler
on a mainframe. y'all are still wet behind the ears.

Welcome to BF. Assembler = punishment for choosing programming as a career. :D

thanks for all the greetings everyone!

glad to see there are more geeks on bikes! maybe we should start a bicycle gang. We could be world renowned! Hells angels won't have nothing on us!

I don't have much experience in assembly or really any low level programming sadly. I played with some x86 assembly and did some C and C++ in high school but only simple things. I would actually really like to get proficient at low level programming. It seems like a lost art for my generation with all the frameworks and behind the scenes "magic" we're accustomed to these days.

I will also have to agree, I do love my job.. considering most of my peers and over all people around my age are flipping burgers or selling shoes it is an amazing gig. Though I am beginning to like biking more!

All last week I rode a roughly combined 80 miles. I didn't realize how fast and convenient it was getting through town on my bike so now I opt for that instead of taking the car. It's a full win win. Health + money saved + Green travel. I just have to invest in a way to carry thing on my bike now.
