Cyclocross - How not to jump the baracade

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. That was a good one.
Being new to cross this exact scenario has crossed my mind. Hope he's OK but I definitely LOLed.

Having seen this kind of thing a lot in cross races, I really expected him to hop up and jump right back on the bike. I've seen people do that with some really nasty looking tumbles. The fact that he didn't is a bad sign, but here's hoping he recovers quickly.

I'm glad there was only one barrier in that section.

For sure. From what I can tell, it looks like he might have had the wind knocked out of him. Seems like he avoided hitting his head as best he could but his back took a nice blow. Can't say for sure but hopefully nothing serious happened.

Wow! I can see myself doing that. According to the race photos thread he's fine and raced again the next day.

He's OK and was back again on the starting line at the MFG #2 Rapha/Focus GP the next morning. Judging from the sun on the footage of him decking that barrier, and with it being the single barrier, I think that happened during the short-course SS-Shootout Eliminator race.

In Eugene last week, one guy hit the barricade with his shin, hard. Hurt to watch, moved the doggoned barricade a couple of feet. He thought about it for a while, but did manage to get back in the race. Man, that left a mark...:(

did anyone notice that another rider right after Joey clipped the barrier as well?
Is Joey REALLY ok? Hear from the man himself, http://www.cxmagazine.com/joey-mullan-barrier-crash-video-singlespeed-eliminator-starcrossed-2011

"You know what I think? I think this is awesome! I messed up, but at least people know who Joey Mullan is."

Isn't that a rule? "If you're gonna wipe out, make it spectacular." It's probably a good thing he flew and rolled. Imagine if he'd faceplanted at that speed. Probably out for the count.
It looks like the second guy who hit the barrier ended up tacoing his wheel. In the Starcrossed (http://www.cxmagazine.com/joey-mullan-barrier-crash-video-singlespeed-eliminator-starcrossed-2011) video he can't keep it rolling straight.
Literally the first thing I was ever taught about off-road biking: crashing (as long as you're not permanently/lastingly damaged) is awesome! The more spectacular, the better. Joey is my new hero--I'd buy the guy a beer if I was at the race.

I was there. I had 2 teammates race against him in that heat (blue rooster). Funny thing is how he was saying he had an advantage over the other riders as he was the only sober one (some truth in that).
He is actuallly a really talented SS racer.
The final for that Shootout race had a pretty nice payout.... Im pretty sure it was for a grand. no joke

He is actuallly a really talented SS racer.
And a genuinely nice guy, too.
If you're racing the whole MFG Series you should swing by the Soft Like Kitten tent and say "hi" (Joey's often there, or close by with the Hodala gang since Traitor doesn't have a big travelling production for the MFG races.) Fremont Brewing just signed on with us (the Kittens), swing by for a pint.
