Hi i just Taped my first road bars and I have some questions (watched loads of Youtube vids but nothing about this aspect)

1. how do you handle the bar end shifter, does the tape just go around the bar once and hold its self ...do you secure it in the bar end like you would with a plug or do you secure with electrical tape?
2. is there a technique for where the bar end shifter cable exits the bar..mine dosent look nice here any tips or better still pics?

thanks Alec.

1. The tape wraps around itself once and keeps itself in place, if you wrap in the correct direction. For right side, clockwise as seen from behind bike, opposite for left side.
2. Pull the tape very tight at that critical turn and it won't gape around the protruding cable. If it does gape, sew it tight with thread.

This is the best how-to I've ever seen, you trim the tape ends diagonally and use electrical tape to secure them. It works great.

For the shift cables, I have mine routed all the way to the top of the bars, and the cables exit the tape at the natural end of the tape near the stem. This works great and is much cleaner than the cables exiting the tape at the bend in the bars. You do need longer cable housing and cables, however, so if you're going to do this, you'll need to re-cable the shifters. You'll probably need a long (tandem-length) rear derailleur cable.

Edit: sprinterdellacasa is Carpediemracing on this forum, which is how I found that post.

Alec, 1) Generally a single overlapping wrap will hold the bar tape at the start. Any minor issues can be addressed with a razor blade.

2) There's two preferred styles of dealing with the shifter cable, exit it from underneith the tape where the bar begins it's upward turn and to run the cable all the way under the wrap to the stem.

Thanks for the info .....I am ok with my first attempt ....but i like the idea of running the cable all the way to bar center ...may try this in the future but first i need another set of wheels and a pay rise.
