I'm in the process of up-grading and acquired this front DR as pictured...

Trouble is (after much internet searching for an answer), it appears that this DR is for an "open wire" cable, verses one that uses an integral CABLE STOP, such as my bike is configured.

Questions...

1. Can I simply add a clamp-on cable stop bracket directly below the DR?
(something like this)...

2. Is that a proper "fix"?
3. Or should I just purchase a front DR with a built in cable stop?

Just get a Front Derailleur with a cable stop.

I think problem solvers sells a stop for that specific purpose. OR just run a short amount of cable under the bottom bracket and end it just short of the derailleur, it doesn't actually need to hit a stop and will work fine.

I haven't tried the new (stop-less) DR because it just doesn't (in theory) seem like the correct geometry. I'd be attempting to pull / straighten the whole inner and outer cable, no? :(

Maxturbo - I've employed the clamp-on cable stop with good results in the past. It is better IMO than leaving the raw housing exposed and having it route randomly.

I like Michael Angelos's suggestion even better - though depending on your crank, it may be hit-or-miss finding one that has the requisite travel for your rings. For whatever reason, the Suntour AR I wanted to use couldn't reach the small ring but I lucked out and found an old Titlist in my stash that worked perfectly.

Hmmm. Pics link (now removed) doesn't work.

Any who...it's a Peugeot tagged (Simplex) Super L J, 28.6 clamp-on all metal unit, in great condition!)

They must be as I heard that some 1974 Raleigh Grand Prix owners seem to prefer the same French components that Peugeot had standard on most of their bikes........:p:p:p:rolleyes:
