Classic & Vintage - The Paris-Roubaix equipped bike I'll be riding l'Eroica on

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
It's finally 100% finished and ready to go to Gaiole! What started out as a nondescript (possibly Garlatti) P-R frame that was converted to city use has been transformed into the first Cicli Masini. My friend Ciöcc was instrumental in refinishing it and fixing a slight but critical alignment issue... AFTER it was painted! He quickly found tools and instructions, heated it up, gave it a tap and matched the paint with no evidence left behind. My patience was rewarded and I now have the perfect bike for my second Eroica!

I must admit to being a closet admirer of your blog and bicycles.
Very nice.
Especially enjoy the Galmozzi entries.
I've learned a lot following your posts.
Have you seen Neil's on 1410?

Saving my nickels. 2016 is the plan.

We'll be back in Tuscany in 2013, but in mid-summer.
Lot's of riding to be sure though.
I think a trip to Tuscany for L 'Eroica would be a wonderful retirement gift to myself, so that's the plan.
I'll make do with the annual Almanzo 100 in Minnesota until that time.

Amazing bike. Wow.
I´ve always felt that wearing a face mask whilst spraying paint was overrated.....
Have fun at L´eroica, I had a blast (purtroppo senza bici) in Montepulciano this summer.

That is a work of art! Beautifully done and another one of those Italian bikes that might cause me to change my mind about derailleur bicycles. I really enjoyed the video and will add the blog to my delicious bookmarks.

I'd like to make a big thing out of it. Start with Eroica, spend some time around Florence and then end around Lake Cuomo. Typically, the Giro di Lombardia is two weeks after Eroica. It would be cool to the Ghisallo climb and maybe Stelvio on the old bike and then watch the youngsters on the new bikes.
Have you done the Dairyland Dare? 100, 200 or 300K of descent climbing in Wisconsin. Should get you ready for your trip in 2013.

Thanks for the kind words! And yes, I'm 100% blown away by the blue beauty on 1410! I've searched Italy and have only seen ONE original head tube badge - he finds one as if Galmozzi were a local MN builder!
Real quick for anyone interested in l'Eroica... keep an eye on my page over the next couple of weekends (hope we get internets in our hotels). I have reserved dinner at the Stucchi-Prinetti restaurant on their property / castle in Badia. They don't display bikes or anything (yet), but I plan on snooping a little and trying to find a family member. I'll definitely be getting some of their wine though, to add to my cycling wines collection.
Following that, I plan to meet with Giancarlo Brocci, the organizer and main man behind the event. He's involved in organizing the GiroBio as well and wants to talk Cannondale stuff with me, along with l'Eroica. I may video a short interview with him as well. There are also a couple of new Italian books being presented, which I plan to attend, followed by seeing all my friends at the market and talking them down on prices for pieces to my 1930's Bianchi city bike and the wife's 1940's Gloria city bike.
I will also try to do a better job searching out short interviews with legends of bygone days... I saw TWO of Coppi's gregari last year and only got a quick shot with one of them.
Again... this is THE greatest bike event for the vintage set. Do whatever you can to get there someday!

Totally agree. I've been staring at these same photos, off and on, all day today. There's an awful lot of drool on my screen at the moment.

When you get to Tuscany, stay as long as the money can hold out.
My wife and I have wonderful memories of our last visit.
As for the Dare, no I have not.
I'll google this, and I thank you for the heads up.
Our little band of merrymakers piled the miles on this year, so we are on the lookout for fun.
I'm about three months out from being in decent Almonzo 100 condition, but I will definitely get my registration in for next year.
I have to build a bike this winter, maybe a Rawlands rSogn.

Nice guy as well, as he posted a plug for a super pretty Kvale I have for sale.

I must say, I'm pretty entranced. How much does this shindig cost? This is a MUST do for me between now and my 40th (that will give me ten years  ) Aside from travel and hotel arrangements, how much is it to register for the ride? Is it always in Tuscany?

You think I can't use google? I already checked the website, but because registration is closed, it really wasn't quite clear. Is it the 100 euros they mentioned for the last 100 entries, or was that to enter some sort of raffle for the last spots? It really wasn't clear.

Don't get snooty with me when you obviously can't use the googles. Since you need to get spoon fed, from the link I posted, http://www.eroica-ciclismo.it/documents/regolamento_eng.pdf

In retrospect, my response wasn't the nicest. However, I feel like you certainly brought the hostility up another level.
At any rate, thanks for the link.

Wow, that's beautiful. :thumb:
I've seen a video, but how exactly do you operate the P-R? Do you push/pull on the lever to switch between lock/unlock and shifting mode?

That was unnecessarily catty and poorly punctuated. I read your posts; you're better than that.
Thanks for posting, mrjav! Your bike is awesome!

I'm curious about this too. They remind me of suicide shifters on motorcycles (my other hobby). Since it's Campy, I can imagine it would only cost me a small fortune and my first born to procure one.

Wonderful bike. Have fun riding it! I remember the area well, the parents of friend of mine have a summer house in the area, so I visited it twice for an extended period. That was all before I got into Italian bikes, off course. I was negotiating terms with my dad to go this year and ride it but unfortunately circumstances prevented it. Even though my ALAN would probably not be up to the standard that most bikes have there...

Funny how people how people come down on me for defending myself against an unprovoked personal attack. Meh. Never said I was Jesus.

There is a sprung load in the lever that holds the chain guide unitary in motion with the lever and Q/R unit of the hub until such point that the chain applies sufficient sidewards pressure on the chain guide. Then the motion of the chain guide is momentarily disconnected from the Q/R unit of the hub and becomes unitary only with the lever allowing you to pedal backwards and guide the chain to the desired cog by moving the chain guide. Once in gear, you stop pedaling and then applying sufficient force on the lever to once again overcome the sprung load, you return to a situation where the motion of the lever is unitary with the Q/R unit of the hub allowing you to once again lock the wheel in place.

Stunning. Wonderful video. If this isn't the spirit of C&V, I don't know what is. Good luck at L'Eroica, mrjav!
It's been long enough but I finally took the time to recap my fifteen-plus hours in the saddle in Tuscany last month. I have a number of photos in there as well. The writeup's a bit long, so I'll link you over at... http://rorymasini.blogspot.com/2011/11/2011-leroica.html
Enjoy, and see you there next year!

Really neat seeing some of these legends, Moser still looks fit. What a great event, 2 wheel magic, steel, tubulars, wool, cool!
